So I've spent the summer planting native plugs all over my front and back yard. First I planted red columbine right next to where a bunch of volunteer red columbine decided to appear the following week. Now I have swamp milkweed growing out of the subterranean trash receiver in my driveway??? This was before any of my swamp milkweed flowered, so this guy definitely came from Somewhere Else 🤔

Anyway it's been very fun to see some actual natives volunteer here and there! Anyone else have any fun surprises as they try to clear invasives out?

I had late boneset and seedbox volunteers recently!

Nice!! I was thrilled to spot hypericum hypericoides, a blue-eyed grass, and a desmodium of some kind fighting their way out of a muddle of invasives in my yard. I’ve also got a big stand of goldenrod, lots of asters, and some native graminoids that managed to persist through the decades of lawn before I got hold of it.

*Symphyotrichum ericoides* (heath aster) absolutely taking over, over here
