In this video, I share the only way I manage gardening in extreme heat. Gardening in summer heat can be brutal, and our summer garden can fall into disrepair when it gets so hot that we no longer want to be outside and maintain it. I share clever ways to install shade cloth that will both protect garden from heat and protect the gardener so you can enjoy gardening all summer long and your plants stay healthy longer.

What’s going on, gardeners? This summer has been the hottest and most humid summer that I have ever endured in my life. Things have been so hot and wicked that I don’t even want to be outside this time of year. And when the weather is like this, we don’t even want to be outside in it. So, because we avoid going outside, our gardens often fall by the wayside. But it doesn’t have to be this way. I’m going to show you how you can modify your climate so it’s not so hot and miserable. This is the only way that I can stand being outside and manage gardening in this extreme heat. Right now, I’m standing out in the open in my unprotected area of the garden. And if you notice, there is nothing growing in any of these raised garden beds. That’s because it’s too difficult to garden at this time of the year out in the open like this. just to do any work in this area of the garden. I would have to wait until at least 7:00 at night so the sun goes below the tree line and I could go out here and get some work done without the miserable conditions. Other than wait until 7:00 p.m. for things to cool off, my only other option was to wait for some storms to roll into the area and the skies to become clouded up, which let’s face it, it’s unreliable to wait for storms. your area may not get storms and even so it’s kind of dangerous to be outside when there is thunder and lightning in the background. So this is not a trick I would recommend anyone do because of safety concerns. My actual sustainable solution, the only way I can manage working in the extreme heat at this time of year is to install shade cloth above my head in my garden. I installed a wooden roof above my garden and then I ran some cattle panels overhead and sitting on top of those cattle panels is a 40% shade tarp and that envelops the whole area underneath it in shade. And this structure right here has made it possible for me to garden out in the open even when the sun is out thanks to the protection of the shade cloth. I have been advocating for the use of shade cloth for many years because not only does it protect our plants from the extreme heat and it keeps them viable longer, but it also protects the gardener us from the extreme heat and it allows us to be outside when we otherwise wouldn’t be able to because of the hot sun, the high humidity, and the extreme temperatures. And there are many different ways that you can do this. You can build a roof over your garden like I did. Put some cattle panels on top and you can secure a shade tarp above with some zip ties. You can build yourself a makeshift high tunnel out of PVC conduits and Tposts just like I’ve done for years and run some clothes line in order to hold that shade tarp to the top and make your own makeshift high tunnel. Or you can install cables throughout your garden and get yourself a grommeted shade tarp and use those inexpensive steel cables to hold it up. Kind of like a giant shade sail. No matter what you choose, there are many different ways that you can do this easily and affordably. You just have to get creative with your imagination. I have made lots of different DIY tutorials on how you can install shade cloth above to protect yourself and your plants. I will link to all of those different tutorials down in the video description for your convenience. That way, you can copy off of my ideas and you can modify them to fit your unique space. I will also place direct links down in the video description to grommeted shade tarps. They come in all different sizes and they are very affordable. So, if you’re like me and your summer sun is so strong and oppressive that your garden falls by the wayside because you just don’t want to be out in it, it’s important to remember that you are not stuck with the climate that you are given where you live. You can create your own protected microclimate by installing simple shade cloth overhead. Not only will it make your plants live longer because they will be somewhat protected and less stressed out, but you will have an easier time gardening as well. There are so many different ways that you can do this. Please check out the different tutorials that I have down in the video description and you can easily create your own affordable way of doing so. It has changed my life and I know it will change yours as well. And that’s today’s 2-minute garden tip. My favorite investment this year was an 80' mister kit off Amazon. It was the best $44 I spent. I ran it around the perimeter of my herb and perennials where we have a seating area and it dropped the temperature enough to feel comfortable. ❤
I have the opposite problem, too shady for anything to flower. The heat made all the wild trees and vines flourish and block my garden. Waiting for it to be cool enough to chain saw.
A hat and long sleeved shirts and lots of hydration. That's all I need in the heat
Love your garden ❤️❤️

15 yr organic gardener here. After years of research about the aerosol spray program going on above us, dumping all kinds of poisons and biologics on us, I have decided to only grow things under a protective cover. With the 3 dig temps here, I have to plan carefully to control the climate inside. So many have been disappointed by their gardens not growing or they get foliage but no fruits or veg. Once put under a protective cover, the plants grow like they should. The founder of Moderna has founded a company to do aerial spraying of all plants with mRna, which will enter the plant thru cuts in the leaves. I will never grow food out in the open again. It's time to perfect a different way of gardening.
Research Dane Wiggington, Dr. Jane Ruby, Moderna founder/mRna and plants. Start digging into this.
I live in Eugene, Oregon and normally feel fall in the air in August. But noooo this time I felt it on July 24th.
It has been humid but not bad and doesn’t happen everyday.
Our summers are getting shorter and winters longer.
Shade clothe is a non issue, at least for now.
It is actually decent in AR for the past week, which is very usual.
Florida has horrible heat this year and nothing flowered from my vegetables. Most died in 3 digit heat and extremely high humidity. Still trying and looking forward to Fall.
I borrow an idea from the Amish and garden first thing in the morning which for me is between 8:30 and 9:30. It's delightful even on those days when the high will eventually hit the 90s!
If it isn't done by 10:00 am, it's going to wait until 6:00 pm here in west Texas. Shade cloth helps the plants, but it doesn't cover me everywhere in the garden… yet. Come on, Fall!!!
Amazon has mister kits.I would highly recommend
I don’t have a really big yard, so I found a brand new cast iron patio umbrella holder at a yard sale for $5. I put in an old umbrella and I just move it around the yard, blocking the sun in the area I’m working in. Works really well for me!
How long do you leave the shade cloth up on the wood/cattle panel frame? Do you change it to something else for winter protection?
I just lost a squash plant here in Indiana to the !#'$#÷/^>& vine borer!!! August 3rd!!
That is so smart 😊
Get shade cloth! You won't regret it!! And you'll get tomatoes sooner too!!!😊
I put tomato cages up over garden beds to drape the shade cloth over I don't have space for overhead shade cloth but this helps😊😊
Thank you for giving us something positive to watch keep your hands in the crops and your feet grounded and your heart kind❤
Shade cloth won’t help with 75% humidity. You sweat even if it’s cloudy.
Nope. I'll see you in mid September
Your Tips and tricks are very good
I took your advice from you last year. It makes a huge difference especially for the plants. Thank you 👍
This is totally spot on! It’s amazing how much better it is when, you yourself, get under the shade cloth! Let alone the plants. 😂 And it’s been brutally hot! Thanks for details and meticulously providing links to everything.
My favorite video about shade cloth is when you sang, “A whole new world.” Actually that’s my favorite video of all that I’ve seen. I hope we get more singing in the future.😊
My problem is the red ants. They make it hard to garden because they have made a path through my garden. I have used ant killer and they don't care; does not faze them. Used granular on the nest to no avel. Don't want to use to much pesticides in the garden. Any advise???
Just want you to know that I thoroughly enjoy your gardening videos but I love Adventures with Dale more!!! He is precious!!! God bless you all!!! Chuck from Texas USA. ✝️👨🌾🙏
We both really enjoy our shade cloth.. past 3 years with it have been a dream.
Y'all have had it rough this year, our weather has been a dream with is a delight after last years history-making 5-month-straight heat wave!
Thank you very kindly!
I'm in Los Angeles, and I put up shade cloth this year using 2×2's and 2×4's for the frame. I love it, and my tomatoes do too.
Garden at night like the majority of us
Where you place & the way you orient your garden is also important.
My garden is located on the east side of my house, where it gets morning sun exposure. The house runs north to south lengthwise. So, my garden rows run north to south lengthwise. I plant at least one row of a tall plant running east to west, typically sunflowers. The sunflowers provide shade to the garden, protecting it from the hellish southern sun exposure. I also plant heat/sun tolerant plants at the southern end of the rows. As the day progresses, the shadow of the house moves over the garden, starting around 11am. By 4 or 5pm, the shade covers most of the garden. It works pretty well & it requires no purchase of materials to frame out & support shade cloth.
Just throwing out an idea that may work for some gardeners. Your situation may not work that way due to the orientation of something that could supply shade, the lack of space in an area that could supply shade, the micro-climate in your zone, etc.
Do you have weed barrier underneath your garden beds ?
It's the mosquitoes I can't bear because of this weather in Indiana ugh
I put up the exact 40% shade cloth you advised, but my plant care photo says my plants look sick with the reason that their no getting enough sun! Trying to keep them safe but I am apparently killing them with kindness. What to do?
Hi can you please tell me what percentages of shaded cloth should I use, I live on the north side of the Alabama state thanks.
