I have cleared all the overgrown weeds and grass in this neglected corner. It’s such a lovely space now and I’m trying to come up with a plan for it. The soil is dry and sandy and it is surrounded by rhododendrons and pines so quite acidic too. I would love to hear any ideas for my next project! Thank you.

Shady border with Hydrangeas, Hostas and Ferns.

Patio & bistro set, few pots with some shade loving plants 👍

Camellias love dappled shade and acidic soil. They’ll give you evergreen interest too. Hydrangeas (the ones that like some shade) would be a nice blue colour in that soil. However, I’m not sure they would like dry conditions so you’d have to water.

I would go with ferns, hostas, heucheras. As long as you keep them watered regularly for the first year they should be fine with dry sandy conditions.

OR Put a membrane down, edge it with stones or decorative edging, fill with gravel or chippings and put a small bistro table and some pots or maybe clumps of bulbs around the tree.

We have some lavender and ornamental grasses that seem to love the shade under our tree. We can’t get a lot to grow there as the tree roots are shallow and steal every bit of available water they can.

More of a platform than in the actual tree if you know what I mean

i would make a den in that back left corner with a bench and bistro table.

  8. Ferns at the back, then wildflowers then a display of different bulbs for different seasons randomly scattered then pansies at the very front

I wouldn’t plant hostas or ferns, as willow trees have very thirsty roots you’d want something more drought tolerant like epimediums or geranium macrorrhizum

Something scented up the back fences (honeysuckle/jasmine)
Lay some bark, have a beautiful bench or patioe set/swing seat. Towards the front, lavender as it will love the poor dry soil but will get enough sun. 👌
You have yourself a summer oasis right there!

A tree bench! I absolutely love them but sadly can’t have a large enough tree.

  12. A Fernery! That place is about 5 times bigger than the corner I’ve built a fernery in this year. Find natural logs, plant ferns (especially Japanese Painted Ferns) and enjoy.

Mine is beautiful. Yours would be better because you have more space

Every Willow needs a wildlife pond under it 😍

Turn it into a little food forest, plant a few blackcurrant bushes, some gooseberry bushes and strawberries for ground cover they all seem to do well in shaded areas

Which way does it face and where in the country roughly are you? Judging by the light it looks like the full fence is to the west and the wall with the slatted fence top is to the north – but it could be an early morning photo?
