Simon Goodenough
A new bursary scheme has been launched to help Island residents take their first tentative steps, or a significant leap into the world of horticulture.
The Simon Goodenough Bursary for Horticultural Training and Work Experience offers grants ranging from £200 to £3,000 for those with the drive and passion to develop their horticultural skills.
Simon Goodenough (1955–2025) was the much-admired Curator of Ventnor Botanic Garden from 1986 to 2011. Following the devastation caused by the Great Storms of 1987 and 1990, he masterminded the transformation of the gardens into a unique showcase of Mediterranean zone flora. Simon also founded the Friends’ Society in 1987, now known as the Ventnor Friends of Wight Horticulture, which continues to support horticulture and horticultural education across the Island.
The bursary, endorsed by Simon’s family and administered by VFWH, is open to Island residents aged 16 and over, including those seeking a career change.
Funding is available in three tiers: Up to £200 for essentials such as protective clothing for newcomers; up to £1,000 for professional qualifications or travel and accommodation for off-Island work experience and up to £3,000 for advanced training at prestigious institutions such as RHS Wisley or Kew Gardens.
