Properties with outdoor spaces often command a premium, and if you’re looking to sell, it’s important to maintain them to get the maximum price for your home. This includes maintaining the lawn, adding gorgeous plants and adding a patio or decking, according to Miroslav Radov, a spokesperson from garage clearance company Rainbow Rubbish Removals. The expert said: “Maintaining a well-designed and flourishing garden can significantly enhance the value of your property.

“A meticulously cared-for garden not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also contributes to its overall market value. By investing in landscaping that includes a variety of plants, trees, and a well-maintained lawn, you can create an inviting outdoor space that potential buyers or renters find irresistible.”

1. Maintain a well-kept lawn

Regular mowing, watering and fertilising keeps the lawn “lush and green”, creating a great first impression.

The expert said a healthy lawn can be a sign to potential buyers that the property is well-maintained, which can increase its value by 3%.

2. Add plants and florals

Planting a variety of colourful flowers can create visual interest and appeal. Flower beds can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your garden, making it more inviting and attractive to potential buyers.

The pro noted: “Well-designed flower beds could contribute an additional 2% to your property value.

“Use plants that are native to your area to ensure they thrive with minimal maintenance.

“Native plants are often more resilient and require less water and care, which can appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. This addition can enhance kerb appeal and increase value by approximately 2%.”

3. Outdoor lighting

Installing lighting to highlight key features and make the garden usable during the evening can be attractive to buyers. It can create a warm and inviting atmosphere as well as improve security and extend the usability of the outdoor space, increasing value by up to 3%.

4. Building a patio or deck

The expert continued: “A well-designed outdoor living space can significantly increase the usability and value of your garden. Patios and decks provide additional functional space for entertaining and relaxing, making your property more attractive to buyers. This could potentially add around 10% to the property value.

“Well-designed garden paths can also enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of your garden. Pathways guide visitors through your garden, highlighting its best features and making the space more useable.”

This doesn’t have to be expensive either, as you can search around for second-hand paving slabs.

5. Regular maintenance

Keeping your garden generally tidy by pruning and weeding can help ensure your outdoor space remains in top condition.

This can improve the value of a home by 2%, according to the expert.

The pro added, “Ensure fences, flower beds, and sheds are in good condition. Adding a fresh coat of paint is a great way to increase the vibrancy in the garden. Choose a colour that complements the space and is a fairly neutral colour that everyone will like.”

If you maintain your lawn, add plants, introduce outdoor lighting, build a patio or deck, and regularly maintain your outdoor space, you could add 22% to your home’s value.
