I moved into my house at the start of spring and gardening through the year been having a fight with some really invasive vines , cutting them back time after time. In april I deemed the leaves to be hops (which i think the lower lighter ones are) but now looking it up all points to them being grapes, especially now they’re fruiting.

But that seems mad in North Yorkshire to have grapes invading my garden? Am I really lucky or am I wrong? Anything I should do for them it they are in fact grapes

Yes they are absolutely grapes. Congratulations.

100% grapes, they’ll be thriving with the hot spring/summer we’re having.
If you wanted to help them along you could feed with a high potash feed such as tomato feed, but they look to be very established and doing well on their own.

They are grapes. Edible grapes maybe not. I made wine from some one year but they don’t really ripen enough.

Yes, they look exactly like mine, it’s been a great year for them in the UK, they will be ripe in a month or so when they turn dark, it might even be the same variety I’ve got Boskoop glory, they taste nice and the foliage goes red in the autumn.

Looks like vitus cognitii. Grapes are small, turn black, have thick skins and bitter seeds. Not good for eating but the birds will devour them.
Lovely autumn colour on the leaves before they drop.

The leaves are also edible, I use them for making a Greek dish.

A common small fruited seeded grape is a variety called Brandt. Sweet but not a lot of flesh. Makes great jelly though.

  9. It baffles me that it’s not common practice in the home buying process in the UK, for the outgoing homeowner to have a good in depth walking tour chat with the new buyer.

    – “This door has a funny squeak, so give the hinge screw a half turn every month”

    – “Pretty sure there’s an old well in the corner of the garden there, gets boggy”

    – “There are grapes growing over the shed, tend to be ripe for the picking come September time”

Means so many years hard earned experience, just disappear with the sands of time
