The blog LawnStarter recently published a ranking of the best American cities for urban gardening, and among the 500 spots that were included in the analysis, Denver ended up in the top 25.
The Mile High City took 25th place overall. It was also determined that Denver has the third highest number of community gardens nationwide, at 120.
To create the rankings, LawnStarter scored the US’s 500 biggest cities based on 14 metrics, including factors like climate conditions, access to community gardens and food forests, and garden nurseries.
While Lakewood ended up ranking 422nd overall, the city was also recognized as a “budding gardening community,” which LawnStarter defined as cities with a population below 200,000 among the top 50 for most community gardens.
Elsewhere in Colorado, Colorado Springs ranked 186th, Fort Collins ranked 337th, Pueblo ranked 348th, Broomfield ranked 369th, Boulder ranked 377th, Arvada ranked 400th, Greeley ranked 416th, Longmont ranked 442nd, Aurora ranked 444th, and Loveland ranked 445th.
In general, climate-related metrics brought Colorado’s cities down the most in the rankings, which included data points like the number of days in the growing season and the average number of days with a temperature of 32 degrees or lower.
New York took first place as the best city for urban gardening followed by Atlanta and Tampa. Somerville, Massachusetts ranked the worst.
