I bought this at Home Depot yesterday. It was identified as a Howarthia gasteria, but I’m not so sure. What do you all think? I’m also concerned about the funny looking root. Should I cut the whole thing off or just remove the brown parts?

That’s some kind of aloe. Haworthia (note spelling) and gasteria are two different genera, and neither of them are what this is.
It looks like it might have had an offset growing underground, but it if that was the case it’s dead now. I would remove all that and just leave the roots.
