I believe the trees in my backyard are Red Tip Photinia. One has had branches that have been slowly dying off, but now I think it's a goner. We love our neighbor, and I'm pretty sure he loves us too, but I think we would both prefer not to have a view of each other's backyards. Is there any type of tall tree or screen type plant that would work well in between the two alive Red Tip Photinias (after I remove the dead one of course)? I don't want to plant another red tip as I've read they are prone to disease. If nothing will work well there, then I'll probably resort to a decorative metal screen of some sort.

The bottom is pretty much full shade. The tops get morning and afternoon sun.

i’d say your best bet is between three plants. it would be three yaupon OR two arizona cypress OR two Monterrey oak at 30g because you don’t want to damage your concrete with a moving machine… Then you can plant Rockrose, turks cap or frog fruit or inland sea oats in front. If you go for full removal. Really depends on what you’re looking for. I was thinking with a pool you want less litter and evergreen. The cypress foliage make a nice backdrop for yellow, pink or red.

native alternatives – evergreen sumac, Juniper, Mountain laurel (high seed litter), cedar elm(high litter), live oak (high litter), red oak(high litter), texas sage would struggle with the shade, Salix negra (black willow) might be up your alley.

make sure to amend your soil when you take those out.

Agree that Yaupon would be a great option. Perhaps the ideal option. Yaupon’s not speedy though, it’ll take a couple years for it to grow into the gap.

Another evergreen option that might fit, though harder to find, is sandpaper tree. Native, tough as nails, medium growth rate, nice spring flowers, the berries can be a bit messy but if it isn’t right over your pool that might not be an issue.

    Bougainvillea on a fountain trellis

You could plant clumping bamboo around the back edge of the grotto thing, Alphonse karr would be nice to look at.

Photonias will eventually get diseased and a pain to remove. Trust me.
