The 42nd triennial festivities of the Greencastle-Antrim Old Home Week included the Old Home Week Flower Show held at the First Church of Greencastle on Monday, August 4. Many visitors attended this year’s theme, “Blooms of Legacy.” The flower show’s varied displays, including a youth division, highlighted fresh cut flower arrangements, tiny miniatures, succulents, and houseplants

Master Gardener Sherrie McCleary had the opportunity to visit and chat with many people throughout the day. Pollinators were the featured topic. A wide range of discussions included creating a healthy pollinator habitat with proper plant choices, identifying pollinator insects and native bees of PA, and recommended seasonal maintenance for pollinator gardens.

It was also a great opportunity to share Franklin County Extension news. Information was provided on our Basic Tree Identification workshop (learning how to identify native trees) scheduled for Saturday, October 4. Also, Master Watershed Stewards are offering a Native Tree and Shrub Sale on September 26. Links for Workshop registration and order instructions for the sale can be found below.

Spotted Lantern Fly is still the hottest topic. As we enter the late summer and fall months, the adults are showing up in substantial numbers to lay new eggs, and it’s on everyone’s mind. Everyone has a story to share about what they are seeing and how they are dealing with it. This is good news because it proves there is a heightened awareness of the threat and the need to react. Sherrie was able to share Penn State research-based information and documentation on how to manage these pests. Our Spotted Lantern Fly headband is always a hit with the children, and some adults as well. Our youngest garden friend was happy to model hers for us!

It was a great day for Greencastle residents and visitors, plus it was a creative and stunningly beautiful flower show! Also, it was a delightful day for a Franklin County Master Gardener to share their enthusiasm. There were conversations about bees, butterflies, and flowers, questions about slow-producing cucumbers and peppers, and various ways to stomp and kill a spotted lantern fly!!

Thank you so much, Greencastle, for letting us be part of your day!!
