UK households are being advised to burn egg cartons in their gardens this summer in a bid to fend off mosquitoes. The pesky insects can be a real nuisance for those enjoying their gardens, whether it’s while sunbathing, barbecuing or pottering about gardening.
But there’s an unconventional method that experts claim works wonders.
One tip involves burning egg cartons in your garden, as advised by one expert, but you should do so with caution to avoid fires or smoke inhalation.
Chris Bonnett, founder of Gardening Express, has offered his advice along with several other tips for British households.

“There’s nothing worse than when you’re having a nice barbecue with friends and family and there’s bugs flying about,” he said.
“They can be a real pain, but there are a few inexpensive ways to keep them away.
“These tricks are really simple and a lot of them involve using things most of us probably already have in our homes.”
Chris recommended lighting an empty egg carton and placing it in a safe place away from any guests, reports the Express.
“The burning smell will stop mosquitoes from entering the barbecue area,” he said.

However, if you’re uncertain about the safety of this method, there are alternative ways to ward off mosquitoes.
This is particularly crucial if anyone in your household or nearby neighbours suffer from respiratory problems, as egg cartons may harbour chemicals that could cause respiratory irritation.
If a safe location for burning egg cartons isn’t available, it’s advisable to opt for one of the other suggestions offered by the expert.
Chris also recommended lighting several candles in your garden as a mosquito deterrent.
Additionally, the potent scents of lemon and garlic are likely to keep insects at bay during your barbecue.
