The new evergreen is about 18" from the trunk of the established tree and fully under its canopy. He had to cut some branches to make room for it.

If there is any valid reason to do this I would love to hear it.

Blue Spruce? Assuming the tree beside/above it doesn’t kill it, that thing will be up to 60ft tall and about 15 ft in diameter at maturity. Your neighbour is an idiot.

Christmas tree that’s going to get cut down in a couple years ?

  3. DalbergTheKing

It’s an experiment. He wants to see how long it will take for the maple to kill the spruce.

My only plausible explanation is perhaps they’re planning to remove the established tree at some point in the nearish future but are leaving it for the time being to provide the pine with a bit of shade from the August heat while its roots establish. August is probably the worst possible time to plant a tree.

Dumb and Dumber have a tree install business?

  6. adognameddanzig

Maybe the plan is to remove the trees just next to it. Cant tell what they are.

Maybe he wants an evergreen tree where the deciduous one is and thinks he can hold off on removing the deciduous one for the rest of the season?

I do this when I’m planning to cut down the existing tree but I want its replacement to establish itself first.

For example. A deciduous tree that fails to provide privacy in winter but provides good privacy in summer. I might do exactly this, let that evergreen grow until it’s crowding the deciduous tree, and then cut the deciduous tree

That way I minimize the amount of time where “swapping” the tree leaves me without privacy

  9. Maybe it’s where they wanted it, it’s their land, why shame them? There could be a million reasons, maybe it’s in memory of their dog that laid in that spot. Or like someone else said it’s for Christmas. But posting a pic to try to shame someone makes you the bad neighbor.

haha! maybe he is planning to cut the tree on left eventually. I have a similar plan. it’s nice to see how ridiculous it will look initially. 😂

You in a hot climate? Will the maple provide afternoon shade while the spruce is rooting?

  12. Visual_Mycologist368

It’s an impractical placement, sure. Maybe they have a reason, who cares. Why shame your neighbor? If I planted a tree, and you posted about it on Reddit, you’d get a visit from me.

  13. existing tree shelters young tree from summer heat, and dropped leaves mean mulch.

different trees can grow together, as in a natural forest environment

  14. InkyPinkyPeony

Maybe they are just throwing it in the ground to move to a permanent spot next season? The maple is so overgrown and poorly shaped maybe they are going to cut it way back.
I just planted one 7 feet from the corner of my shed but I intend to remove the lower branches over time so I can eventually walk under and it will clear the shed roof.

Every year, my mother-in-law plants the Christmas tree (pot and all) in the garden. Because it stays in the pot, it never grows very big. Maybe that’s what’s happening in the photo—planting it so close to another tree? Not sure

Edit: forgot to mention she puts the tree inside during Christmas using the pot ofc

  16. Powerful_Put5667

No valid reason at all other than they know nothing about planting trees and that you plant for the grown tree not what you have. Unless you have an excellent relationship with them and can explain it to them it’s going to eventually die.

The established tree is an ash and the [emerald ash borer](https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-pests-diseases/eab/eab-infestation-map) is relentless. Your neighbor is quite wisely planning for the future. Not so wisely planting a colorado blue spruce, but still I’d say he’s an OK guy.

Note that EAB doesn’t attack young ash trees until the trunk reaches the size they need to make a home under the bark, around 6″ diameter or so.

  18. SpaceBroTruk

I planted that tree to see if any of my neighbors are on reddit.

  19. shawnkfox

The tree it is planted below appears to be an ash tree. Maybe the owner is aware that EAB is coming and will likely kill it soon anyway, so he is just using the ash tree as a nurse tree until other tree is established. Of course, your neighbor could also be stupid but has lucked into making a smart choice.

Why wouldn’t you just go ask your neighbor? Done, no need to take pictures, post, and read replies. Just straight to the source.

Probably no worse than he thinks of you taking pics of his property..
