Hi guys, this huge redwood turned over in my friend’s backyard. He’d like to build out the yard to be more of a hang out spot, but I suggested he think about incorporating the roots as some sort of art or living wall. Any ideas?

Looks messy reaching the canopy like that. Imo should be stump grinded or pulled out.

Carve it or pressure wash it and turn it into really cool yard art. Make it the back wall for an entertainment area like a fire pit or hangout seating. Anchor a shade sail off the highest point.

Start by weed whacking and thoroughly raking the area clean. Dig out around the base of the roots and smooth out those piles. Start watering the area and spread grass if you need to. And a fire pit, and boom you have an awesome chill spot. Maybe peel off bark from the stump, but I personally wouldn’t mess with it too much. I would actually find moss from close by and put it around the base. And some ferns for good measure.

Clear the area around the stump as much as you can of vegetation and yard art as it’s distracting from the beauty of the stump, place a backdrop of evergreen shrubs behind the stump so the unique reaching arms are more defined, then lay a bed of mulch with edging around the stump. Basically dialing up the purposeful approach and beautifying the space. Then you can consider planting something IN the stump or doing a stumpery or whatever. Just don’t distract from the stump itself imo
