I'm pretty new to this.
This is what's left of a larger cutting that was shipped to me. My original intention was to plant/root the whole cutting but, unfortunately, there was some rot that got to it during shipping. A fairly large patch, starting from the top of the cutting. I may have been able to get away with cutting off a bit less, but I wanted to be extra safe because the nasty patch was obviously spreading very rapidly.
I was left with about a 2" long piece that I'm trying to salvage. I let it callous for 5 days before planting.
The potentially good news is that the buried end is the bottom of a side branch so it has a relatively small cut area which is extremely well calloused. Seems like lots of rooting potential down there.
Does it have a chance? Should I leave the soil completely dry? Any advice is appreciated. I'd really like to save it, if possible.

Leave it dry.
While you wait a month or so, look up how to make your own san pedro potting mix.

Sheāll pop a pup w love, time, and correct mix
Iāve seen a video of some guy rooting a whole bund of pieces like this!
That āsoilā will rot it out. Put it proper draining soil and itāll be fine
Its best to root in straight perlite, no water at all. Give it a gentle tug every 10 days or so. When there is significant resistance, repot it in the actual soil mix you want to use. Also since this cutting has so little plant mater/water reserves left to work with give it minimal light until it roots. It needs some, but avoid direct sunlight for sure.
Dilute pee makes a good now-and-then fertilizer. The peepee tek though is more about stimulating pupping/new growth than it is about fertilizing. I’m not sure how much the added nitrogen plays a role, if at all, but the cytokines in human urine mimic the plant hormones that stimulate pupping and new growth. Once this guy has some viable roots, it’s very possible that a little pee could go a long way to inducing a new pup to form.
Yes
Totally safe!!!
