It was thanks to a heartfelt Facebook postCommunity helps with garden makeover in Bampton

Community spirited volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help learning disabled adults in Devon makeover their garden.

A team of 14 villagers spent the day weeding, digging and planting at Oak Tree House, a residential service in Bampton, Devon, run by the learning disability charity Hft.

The community came together after support worker Sue Marley put out an appeal on social media asking for help to tackle the garden.

Local people worked alongside the learning disabled adults who live at Oak Tree House to complete the work.

As well as the weeding and planting, the team installed a new, wooden one garden arch, planting it up with climbing plants.

A lunch of sandwiches plus cakes made by villager Phill Johns made sure the team’s energy levels were kept up for the day.

Oak Tree House Service Manager Kay Nicholls said: “It was a real team effort and the people we support really enjoyed getting involved.

“There was a big section of the garden which had become very overgrown.

“Now, thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, it looks like a well-kept garden with proper structure to it.

“One of the people we support, Fran, took on the role of planting up all the pots that were emptied and has now taken on responsibility for tending to them and ensuring they are watered every day.

“A huge shout out needs to go to Sue Marley who ensured the day was massively successful by promoting the open day tirelessly on Facebook and drumming up support.”

The garden improvements are continuing, with the individuals at Oak Tree House now working with the support team to make fairy doors for the large oak tree in the garden.

“We cannot thank the members of the local community who came out to help us enough,” said Kay.

“The garden looks fabulous and is now a space for everyone to enjoy.”
