Sorry, completely unrelated thought but seeing the size of your lawn and thinking how long it must take to mow has made me stop complaining about doing our tiny patch.
Respect to you Sir/Madam, your lawn looks great with or without the fairy ring.

Hide your children, don’t tell anyone your name, and don’t eat food that you don’t know for sure belongs to you. IT’S THE FAE

Because the fungus started in the middle and spread out from there, taking the nutrients it wanted and growing outwards into fresh soil.
It wont grow back inwards because it has taken all the easily available organic matter from inside the circle. So the circle expands ever outwards.
The mushrooms are not “the fungus” itself, they are more like fruit on a fruit tree and their job is to release spores into the air currents so the wind can disperse them to start new colonies in other places.
99.9% sure they won’t get you fed or high but IDing them is a fun project anyway.

I was told that it’s from an old tree tattoo has long since gone but the fungi form a circle where, in the ground, the ancient root base lies. So, the mushrooms have grown there for hundreds maybe thousands of years.

Also word of caution. I know many people will say fairy rings = magic mushrooms. But actually many mushrooms including many toxic kinds form fairy rings. So don’t go picking and eating unless you 100% can identify the type of shroom.

[“Fairy rings are caused by an individual fungus growing underground. The fungus sprouts lots of small threads, called mycelium, in a circular shape. A year later, the mushrooms pop up out of the ground at the edge of the circle, creating the fairy ring. The circle will start off small in size, getting bigger as it gets older.”](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/08/what-is-a-fairy-ring/#:~:text=What%20causes%20fairy%20rings%3F,circle%2C%20creating%20the%20fairy%20ring)
