Oil can only occur during the Oil Rain weather event in Grow a Garden.
Typically seen following the Junkbot Raid weather event, the Oil Rain event is much like it says on the tine – the game literally rains Oil, with the chance of applying a mutation of the same name to crops in your garden.
So let’s take a look at the Oil mutation and Oil Rain weather in Grow a Garden.

How to get Oil mutation in Grow a Garden
To get a Oil mutation in Grow a Garden, you need to have experienced the Oil Rain weather event in game. Afterwards (or during if you’re lucky), investigate your plants and see if a fruit has a dripping black effect. This is a Oil mutation!

Another method of getting the Oil mutation is to use the Junkbot pet, handed out to all those who was a part of Albert admin abuse. As it stands, this is the only other way you can acquire this pet – and thus receive the Oil mutation – outside of the Oil Rain weather event itself.

As of right now, it’s unknown as to how much of a multiplier it applies to affected drops. Considering that it’s a fairly rare mutation to have on a crop however, there’s a decent chance it’ll provide a solid boost to the value of any crop with the mutation applied.
Grow a Garden Oil Rain
Oil Rain is a weather event in Grow a Garden where oil will quite literally fall and rain from the sky.
It appears the event may have some relation to the Junkbot Raid weather event since the description of that event is “Oil or Boil”, and after the first event of Junkbot Raid, there was a vote put to players to choose between Oil and Boil as the next event to follow.

That said, at the time of writing, the only Oil event to take place was an admin spawned weather event. This means it only occurred because the game’s developers expressly made it happen. We don’t know if it will always be an admin spawned event, however, so keep an eye on those skies!
Still, your best chance to experience the Oil Rain event is to jump into Grow a Garden an hour before it updates as the admins always like to run special weather events in the build up. For UK players, this would be 2pm (BST) with the update arriving at 3pm (BST).
