We’ve about 140m of tall hedges (2.5 / 4m tall and up to 1.5m deep) that I cut myself. The garden multi tool I use has given up the ghost and I need to replace it.
What petrol powered tool would you buy? Another garden multi tool (small pole hedge cutter and strimmer combo) or a long bladed hedge cutter?
Unbelievably, we’ve reduced the size of the hedges by about a metre in the past and our neighbours are reluctant to have them smaller.

Id go petrol, or a powerful battery one (if thats possible) Stihl do really good for both but are expensive and dewalt do decent hedge trimmers
I’d recommend Makita EH7500W. It looks like TradeCounterDirect is the cheapest, at around £470 inclusive of VAT.
If you want a multi tool replacement and have the budget then a Stihl Kombi Engine with a hedge trimmer attachment would make short work of that hedge. They’re available in both battery and petrol.
If going petrol if recommend the KM 94 model. It’s good plenty of power without being too heavy. I have the KM 131, and while it will go through anything it is hard work swinging it about.
If you decide to go battery then the longest lasting battery system is the AP system.
In terms of cutter length, the longer the better, but obviously keep in mind it adds weight. You can buy a harness which helps a bit, but is more effective when using a strimmer attachment than a hedge trimmer because of the height you need to hold it at.
Husqvarna also do a good range of both kombi systems and hedge trimmers.
Keep in mind these are all professional level tools. They’re expensive, but will make short work of that hedge.
It may be worth posting a rough budget so people can make other recommendations.
My go to for power tools, I have no affiliation, is World of Power. Plenty of info on there, other dealers may be offering the same. Not only a budget, but your physical ability too will be worth considering, the heavier the harder etc. As for battery power, given the enormity of the task, I’d be inclined to stick with petrol for ease and power, I do appreciate the environmental thinking as well as the advancement in battery power etc.
By the way, if it’s your hedge, why is your neighbour telling you what height? Reduce it to a manageable size without the tall reach if it were mine.
Also get a tripod ladder. I have a niwaki.
Hi everyone my post keeps getting removed. My garden is similar to this and is full of tiny little spiders. My kids don’t want to play on the grass because of them. How can I solve this problem?
We use stihl battery powered ones at work – I like the long folding ones for hedges – downside is the batteries are expensive and don’t last for ages
I’ve got an extendable pole Makita battery powered hedge trimmer – it’s fantastic, battery lasts for ages (I’ve never emptied one while cutting hedges) and it’s relatively light (I’m a short woman, not the strongest). If you’re looking to slowly build up a collection of things then I’d recommend makita battery range, if you’re only looking for one or two things then the cost of a battery/charger probably isn’t worth it
As age gets to us all go battery, lighter and quieter. For the amount of hedging you want a good Ah, minimum 5 preferably 8+. Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Stihl offer good options just depends on price point.
Stihl long reach. Petrol.
Battery will easily last you long enough – there’s not a huge pull on cutters. I have both the Stihl HSA86 and the extendable 85 one so it goes to about 3m. I have well over 100m of 15ft hedges both sides and do that on well less than a battery so that would be a doddle
That’s a lovely hedge congrats
Also can’t go wrong with Stihl,
