Hollywood bombshell Pamela Anderson may be known for her glamorous image, but at heart, she’s a true Canadian. In 2021, during the pandemic, she returned to her roots on Vancouver Island, settling into Arcady (she says that it means a peaceful, rustic place), her family’s seven-acre property she purchased from her grandparents 30 years ago.

Her garden there is bursting with life: fragrant roses, ground cherries, a variety of melons, and so much more. In a recent Zoom interview with Architectural Digest, Anderson shared how gardening has taught her valuable life lessons. “The garden is such a metaphor,” she said. “You can replant your garden every year, rotate your crops. I started learning a lot about it and thought, This is how I want my life to be.”

Pamela describes her garden as ‘Provençal’. “It’s wildflowers and herbs and vegetables mixed in. I’m combining the rules of gardening and then more of my whimsical nature.”

Pamela Anderson’s #1 Tip for First-Time Gardeners

Ready to start your own garden but not sure where or how to start? Pamela shared some no-nonsense tips that will lead you down the path to success. “Just make a lot of mistakes and try. Really, it’s soil, water, and sun. It’s the simplest thing.”

She goes on to say, “There’s just something about it—getting your hands dirty, even being barefoot in the garden—something about it connects me back to who I am. That’s where I found myself again, so it’s very special.”

Growing tomatoes, peppers, and herbs is a great place to start if you’re new to gardening. Planting perennials (flowers and bushes that return year after year) is also a good starting point because you don’t have to replant new plants each season. Pamela’s reminder that mistakes are part of the process is a nod to the imperfect nature of gardening…and life itself!
