The hedgerows in the west of Ireland are ablaze with colour in August. The vibrant orange flowers of crocosmia, also known as montbretia, jostle against fuchsia bushes dripping with red and purple blossoms. These plants are so familiar and grow so well here, they are sometimes mistaken as native to Ireland.

However, crocosmia is from South Africa and fuchsia from South America, and while they were originally introduced here as ornamental plants, they have since escaped into the wild and multiplied.
