We have a giant silver maple in front of our house that shades the whole block. The city started construction on our street today and did this to the roots… it’s a goner, right?
I know it’s technically not our tree because it’s on the easement, but I’m so bummed. I’m also very worried because when this thing fails it will fall directly through the neighbor’s house across the street…
How long do you guys think we have until it starts to die and becomes dangerous?

I don’t think it’s got long if they done that to it!
No! It is not necessarily a goner! I do NOT, by any means, want to accuse your local government of actually knowing what they are doing, but this does not look too bad. It appears that the roots that are damaged are all pretty small, although there are many of them. If this does not stay exposed for too long, this tree has a pretty good chance of recovery, IMO. You can help this tree by draping burlap over the exposed roots and applying water when you can to prevent them from excessive drying.
Not to be a dick, but I have been an arborist for many years, and I can not tell you which way a tree will fall. Why do you assume this will fall into the house across the street?
I wouldn’t count on it falling across the street. But yes, it’s pretty much screwed.
