The long sunken garden with gravel paths sits 4 feet below the house. It’s protected from the ceaseless coastal winds by low retaining walls, a row of purple-leaf plums, a 7-foot-tall retaining wall at the far end, and a Hicks yew hedge behind rammed-earth columns. A lion’s head fountain spills water into a rill leading to a rectangular pond aligned with a window in the home. The retaining walls have a poured-concrete coping tinted greenish blue to harmonize with the home’s teal windows.
