Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost has opened up about a “frustrating” time regarding his son Oakley. The presenter’s 18-year-old son is currently learning the ropes as an apprentice at a stoneyard, but Adam insists his journey up to that point hasn’t been plain sailing.
Just before his son sat his GCSEs, the gardening expert said the youngster was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), which can include symptoms such as being easily distracted, and having difficulty following instructions.
“He wanted to do A levels but the wheels sort of came off,” the 55-year-old told Woman’s Weekly Magazine.
“He did landscaping for a year but that didn’t really work out, which I think was a bit frustrating.”
To get him back on track, Adam said he helped Oakley secure an apprenticeship at a stoneyard near their home in Lincolnshire.
Two months into his son’s new role, the gardener, who also has three other children with his wife Sulina, has already been impressed with what he’s learned so far.
“I took Oakley to a stoneyard and now he’s eight weeks into his apprenticeship,” he shared.

“They had him using a chisel straight away, and oh my goodness, what that boy has created in that time is incredible.”
Adam spoke out about his son’s U-turn after finding himself on a similar path in his teens.
Due to being dyslexic, the presenter said people in his position are “brought up to feel like you’re a bit dim” and not being able to “do anything of value”.
“As a result, you learn other skills,” he shared. “I think I’m socially intelligent and as you get older, your brain frees up and you realise that the thing you can do are of value.”
Adam once said that, after believing his only options were to join the army, become a chef, or forge a career in gardening, he almost chose the first.
Instead, he realised he would enjoy gardening more having previously helped with chores at his grandparents’ allotment.
From learning multiple skills there, he went on to train at the North Devon Parks Department, working alongside the now late Geoff Hamilton at Barnsdale Gardens.

Since 2016, Adam has been a regular co-presenter on Gardeners’ World, working alongside lead host Monty Don, and other presenters such as Carol Klein and Frances Tophill.
Previously speaking to House Beautiful Magazine about his move into television, he said: “I was incredibly lucky to get a job with the legendary Gardeners’ World presenter Geoff Hamilton when I was 21.
“Working for him had a huge influence on me and cemented my passion for plants.
“When I first appeared on Gardeners’ World, I received a text from Geoff’s widow, Linda, saying how proud of me he’d have been.
“I sat watching the programme with tears rolling down my cheeks.”
Gardeners’ World continues tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
