PINE RIVER

— Happy Dancing Turtle in Pine River has two August events celebrating the summer season’s bounty.

As the availability of fresh, local produce ramps up, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the abundance and food may inadvertently go to waste.

From 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, take part in a class on food waste reduction to learn tips, share ideas and take part in a hands-on activity focused on using scraps from fresh produce.

Class cost is $7. To register, go to

The garden at Happy Dancing Turtle showcases a variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers, as well as growing techniques.

Open Garden time is from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14. Drop by to see soil health practices demonstrated, check out season extension in the hoop houses, and ask the garden team questions about the thriving vegetable, flower and fruit plants.

This event is free and no registration is required.

Happy Dancing Turtle, 2331 Dancing Wind Road SW in Pine River, is a nonprofit dedicated to growing good stewards of the planet by providing education, programs and experiences for youth and adults that inspire wonder and empower change.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “Pineandlakes Echo Journal.” Often, the “Pineandlakes Echo Journal” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
