Today I’ll show you what I have planted and what I have planned for our back yard. It’s still a work in progress as we still have some major construction to do. But it hasn’t stopped me from planting roses! I hope you enjoy the tour!

hey everyone this is Lisa welcome to my YouTube channel In the Garden with Lisa Manique so last week we did a front April garden tour this week we’re going to do a back April garden tour it’s about um a little over a week since I filmed the front tour and we did have a week of severe storms uh but my tulips are still blooming back here this backyard is a mess and so I’m a little hesitant uh to show it is um ongoing project to get it cleaned up i actually have uh hired somebody to come and help um do some of the harder labor uh so I can just concentrate on planting things but I will show you what I have going on the backyard has not been cleaned up i’ve got empty grow bags everywhere i’ve got weeds everywhere um it is definitely a spring garden i do want to again show a picture of what my house looked like last um year at this time still under construction we still had not moved in uh we still don’t have a back patio so a lot of the garden space that I have especially closer to the house will be uh removed or torn out when we do get the patio or I’m not sure if we’re going to do a sun room or a porch or what we’re going to do we’re still thinking about that but uh again I’ll just show you what uh I’m working on right now i just purchased this cedar planter right here today this morning at our uh Williamson County plant sale um or their master gardener plant sale and I’m going to put my herbs in this planter so they’re really easy to access from the uh from the house because right now my vegetable garden is you know behind the garage uh over in that corner uh it is a no spray area and um I tend to not go back there very often and so I don’t even uh pick any of my herbs so I wanted to do it um up here so that I can just open this sliding glass door and cut a few herbs so I will um be planting those here um again it’s just a temporary temporary deck so let’s go ahead and walk around this garden space the original raised beds that I’m going to show you I had nine i took one out already um but the original nine raised beds uh I had put in before they even started construction on the house so I did have cut flowers in them all last year um and I’m just kind of deciding what to do with them now uh so first of all we’ll walk over here okay this is a very small bed here it is west facing the back of the house um I did uh when I hired um my landscapers to put in the front um driveway bed uh and then there’s a really long bed along the back fence here um I did have them put this bed in and also a bed by the garage so this has got really really good soil the whole thing has been dug up so I had some daffodils up front i’ll put pictures of them the Queensland were early daffodils and they were so cheery they were all kind of facing um south uh that’s uh the one thing um when I’m planting things here you know nothing’s facing into my um backyard they’re all facing i’m getting the backs of everything uh but anyway it was really pretty i had the Queensland i’ll put pictures ascot Delka i don’t know how to say that one uh so I will probably leave most of these here uh cuz it was really really pretty i have sweet peas all along this back wall and I have not um attached them up those bamboo poles i’m going to try that this year uh in the past I had um them in almost a teepee and it just got really crowded plus it was the um cicada year last year and they loved the sweet peas and like every time I like went to tie them up or do something to them I had like a thousand little red beady eyes looking at me it really kind of freaked me out um so anyway I’ve got them i’m going to try and grow them up this wall i’ve got right here and I’m loving this let me bring it closer got the lilac cutting that I took from my dad’s house in Maine i’m not sure how it will do in our heat down here but uh it’s doing really good right now i also in the back stuck some um echanasia there’s like Cheyenne spirit echynasia so I I think I have six or seven plants there um I do have a Leaf France rose there the Leaf France was the very first hybrid tea uh in 1867 it’s the one that switched from old garden roses to modern roses um so I’m interested to see how that grows um I do have a few renunculus growing uh I think I randomly just stuck some extra corns that I got late in the season uh anywhere I could find space and ignored them all season and they look like they are going to bloom maybe better than the ones that I put in the bed oh no my bed actually is getting some renunculus too so yeah so I have a couple renunculous there then I have uh several peies this one in the front um was also from my dad’s house in Maine i think it was a white peie and then I have the two Alexander Fleming pianies behind it and then this one is called Minuette and then this one is vivid rose so this is a late peie this one’s a late peie i’m not sure if those are early or not and then I’ve got you know a background of weeds so uh this area definitely needs to be cleaned up and weeded um and I’ve just got a some trash um yeah so this back yard is kind of a mess so I really need to make it look pretty and that crawl space is really handy that’s where I kept all my dalas um in the winter it stays an even 60° in the summer and winter so um it is a nice consistent temperature underneath okay now I’m going to flip it to my raised bed area and then these were my dalia beds last year where I have all the daffodils i don’t really like the daffodils in between the um in the dalia beds i kind of put them on the back side thinking I’d put the dalas in front of them which would be uh this side here because this is the south facing um and then I could just leave them both in the ground um but I don’t know i might dig out the daffodils i don’t really think they do anything there and I’d rather have them in the front border of other beds i mean there’s just no reason it’s kind of ugly with unless I took out all the tost it’s just really not that pretty but these are my late daffodils and then I had my early ones uh that have already died back all right let’s look over here again and we just had that week of tornadoes and torrential rain and it kind of did a number on my tulips but I still have plenty left this is what I want to do along my front border i want to just do this tulip mix grow bags that are too heavy for me to empty out but they’re just sitting here which then make my anemy bed look ugly and then I’ve got the wire um yeah so this bed looks really bad uh I do have somebody I’m going to have them I took out the hardware cloth on this first bed cuz I was going to put roses in there they need to be attached together and then I hired someone and I was going to have them lift up all the hardware cloth put up the pavers i bought a pallet of pavers um just square pavers at Home Depot let’s see i don’t know if you can see that pallet um over there by the shed but um yeah I’m going to have them just put pavers between the beds and then I want to try and grow some micro clover as the ground cover but now I’m not sure if I’m going to put roses in there i don’t know if those of you that saw my jumping worms um video this these two beds right here they have a lot of jumping worms it’s actually the lowest part of my yard until you go to this kind of wash area where um it’s like just a raging river whenever it rains and the worms really love those beds and I have worms of course throughout my yard that and the Asian jumping worms aren’t necessarily good worms to have but uh as long as you keep um replenishing your soil with compost and everything they’re not going to really harm your plants um if you don’t do anything to your soil they can actually deplete all the nutrients from them but they’re just so gross because there are so many of them like you do a shovel full and there’s like eight or 10 of them in one clump so um I do have some birds i don’t know if you can see the bird i’ve got a bird right there in the grass a little robin down there but where this Tost is I bought this birdhouse today and I’m hopefully going to attract more birds and that they will come eat the worms all right let’s continue back here this bed here was just kind of a overseated bed so I didn’t plant any of this um it just grew from what I had in there last year so last year this was my cool season bed and it was supposed to be like all fillers so I had some Nigella and Dra i have Bells of Ireland B Plurum Bachelor Buttons Larkspur i mean a ton of stuff and you can see that the Dara I was hoping this was going to be Ora it might be Ora it’s hard for me to tell the difference between Ora this does look like a Ora i do love Ora um it’s such a pretty um filler in with uh other flowers but it dies back early so this actually looks like it could be ora so that’s good here I had some overwintered thyme it’s doing pretty good um I have these uh what are they the strawberries the ground strawberries weeds and the violets i normally pull them but they’re so pretty right now i’ll let them go but all of this needs to be weeded again this was just a tulip mix and um the early ones have dying back and now I’m getting these beautiful tall ones this was supposed to be my cut flower area where I can just reach in and pull whatever tulips I want um and cut them and not worry about messing up a front border and then you know this is where it gets really ugly i’ve just got some compost and manure behind there this um was a renunculous bed but something else overseed in here i’m not sure if those are a weed or if that’s something I had last year here’s another bed same thing i don’t even know what the bulbs are that are that are growing in there i don’t even know why those are in there um but you know this bed was just packed with I mean several hundred dollars worth of renunculous corns and I am not going to have that great of a showing all right so I’m going to put Dalia’s all in front of all of these daffodils i will dig up these daffodils and move them so they can die back somewhere else uh last year I had two rows of dalia in each bed the far row um really struggled though so I think I’m just going to do a single row of dalas um I have four rows here i’ll do three in the ground and the farthest one um with the hay on the or the pine straw uh I’ll put in grow bags should we talk about roses let’s just talk about roses really fast um right here oh Princess Holly’s Hope that one I bought like on Etsy that’s a newer rose it’s really beautiful it’s a florest rose so again a lot of these are florest roses in the backyard so we’ll see um we’ll see how well they do in our environment because typically florest roses were not grown in home gardens or weren’t bred for success in home gardens they were bred to be um grown in mass in uh green houses or in uh temperate climates but I have the Julieta that will go here not Juliet but Julieta and this is Julieta Sice and this is Julieta Raspberry so these are some of my favorite roses so I do want them to do very well okay secondyear rose here cocoa Loco i dug up my unforgettable here and I’m going to put a golden mustard here distant drums this is super prolific bloomer uh this is honey dijon also really prolific bloomer and then hot cocoa which didn’t do all that well um for me we’ll see if I get the big pie shaped cut cup blooms behind me I have my grand dame which was amazing it was so beautiful uh this is a David Austin James L austin also another beautiful one this one is my young licidus right here my Gabriel oak it’s also really small one but it it looks healthy okay cover it with a bucket f this is a Fiji elegana okay maybe I will talk about them this will be Sheffield Park and this one will be um true inspiration so it’s a true bloom rose i love my fence uh the one thing about my fence um it was a chain link uh I wasn’t here when they were putting it in and they said “Do you want the pretty side on the inside or the back side?” And I was thinking you had to have it on the outside so this is the ugly side which looks really good so now I wish I had the pretty side facing me it just had more of a lip across like a tabletop across the top um yeah so my neighbors get to enjoy the beautiful uh beautiful fence uh but anyway so these are the pots i’ve got my Princess series here Princess Hitomi um Princess Maya Pr uh Princess Sakura and Princess Fairy Kiss again these are um florest roses i only have two in here now i’ve got Miyabi oh I have another Miyabi coming and then a Miyabi Brown so that’s gonna be my little Miyabi row and then this one is Nodding Hill and I hear that one’s a little what’s the word delicate we’ll see i got a bunch of unique roses here this one’s shades of beige this one is called French Lace that one’s a David Austin Susan William Ellis this one is First Crush crescendo this one was given to me um it has a bud so hopefully getting some aphids uh it will bloom soon quicksand again more florest type roses um Whit Whitby Abby this one is a one called Catherine it says it’s a Danish rose i really can’t find it anywhere except for the place that I bought it but it’s a real pretty pink rose it’s Katherine with a K uh for my other daughter since I have the Sarah Elizabeth clatus um even though it’s spelled different than she spells her name uh oh this one says souvenir de malame but I planted that in front so that one is not going there so I do have a space for another rose there coming back here sedoni rose of fascination these were from um Palatine roses in Canada um they announced last fall they were not going to sell um mail order anymore which is really sad because these are so beautiful and healthy um and they were unique and this is the uh Roser Duchelle got a few anemies growing behind me i had some daffodils these daffodils are ones that I’m going to move to the front yard sensuous raspberry cupcake i did just buy another raspberry cupcake um at Lowe’s so um maybe that’s what I’ll put right here so I’ll have the two raspberry cupcakes um you just walk by it and you could just smell it so it when you were there you’re like “Okay which rose has that really strong fragrance?” It is a raspberry cupcake this area I found like a septic pipe um we used to be on septic before I purchased the house and now we’re on sewage but some of the pipes are going through here so I’m kind of not going to be able to put anything deep here um I’ll have Beverly Eleg O’Hara and over here is my cathedral bells i said sensuous chiffon and bolero um so that’s an from heirloom that rose is looking really good and healthy too okay let’s move farther back okay I do have some bleeding hearts here uh I thought it was a weed and I picked one up and then I saw my little tag um oh I see a renunculus growing right here oh I said renunculous so I must have planted renunculus right here um Monique uh Monnique Darve which has not come yet pink O’Hara which I had overwintered mine looks really looked really delicate so they’re in the garage but I can bring her out now liv Tyler Notredom Connie Sandstorm Sunb Belts Savannah uh my allergies are starting to act up ball gown oh I have two ball gowns here steven Rulo and Princess Anne another David Austin i’ve got three pianies right here let’s see which ones I have mos Mosure Jeles Eli Joker joker is supposed to be an early one but this is pretty small must not really like it here this is early also and then Eden’s Perfume which is a mid blooming peie oh I do have one random um it’s not Veronica ver Verbasum um southern charm verbascum right there um yeah I just stuck it in and then of course I have some irises because I ordered a hundred irises and just was sticking them everywhere so this is my little veg area uh but I have panache don and queen [Music] Elizabeth got raspberries thornless raspberries thornless blackberries that’s an empty bed i’m not sure what I’ll put there in front of these four metal raised beds I’m going to put my four tomatoes uh the second bed are my strawberries i’ve got them covered with hardware cloth and then this bed I have beets and shell peas you can see I had to lift up the hardware cloth because the shell pies were getting too tall i think I have a screen or a trellis that fits here here these are my garlic the tallest leaves um got onions which are the shorter ones no these are scallions scallions over here the multi- ones onions are back there i stuck some random ginger in there too and I also stuck onions around all the garlic now the grow bags back here i’m also going to put a row of dalas in grow bags um back against this shed um that’s kind of wood chip pile it’s breaking down nicely and I’ve been using it to put the bottom layer of a lot of my beds uh that was from when we cut down trees but here is the backyard people ask “Yeah so many plants do you have any grass?” We still have a ton of grass um you know I have 185 roses um 150 something dalas and I still have a lot of grass okay and then this last bed is my garage bed i did buy a fig tree that I need to stick somewhere oh my gosh I love how fluffy these tulips are these are the Mount Tacoma tulips super super fluffy um I’ve got a holly i have another holly up front that I need to move it’s a um gosh what kind of holly well I still left the tag on it so I’ve had this for you know since last summer it’s a Berry Magic Kids so it’s got both the male and female uh together and this one should do well here the other one I have like in an area that doesn’t get any sun so I need to move it uh again here is the uh American Beauty climber uh which was the same type of rose my grandmother grew which started my love of roses um next to it I put another climber okay so I have the pretty and pink Eden climbers really tiny right now right there um I have some holly hawks these are double holly hawks this will be second year so hoping those look really good this one this rose I know it’s kind of a red rose uh this is my sweet spirit rose uh over here I have another france which was the original hybrid tea um but this one is a climber um I do have another white trellis um on the front porch to be put together and so um what I’m hoping is this pretty and pink will come up here and then spread over to this one and then this one will come up over and um fill in this area behind me i’ve got some Zantouch charm tulips here a lot of them didn’t come up i had a lot more here i’ve got here’s the three southern bell verbas and this one is really funny to me this is a um baptisia the lemon mering baptisa this area is really messy but I’ve got more of those beautiful tulips the Mount Tacoma and then I’ve got a Sarah Burnernheart peie coral charm peie and Katerina Fijit i don’t know how to say fonten fonten peie there so got three right there and then this right now is kind of my little processing station so when we build our porch um we had them roof it uh and frame it out so that we can just continue the roof line and pull it back along the garage um and I think we’ll probably screen it or make it a sun room probably the width of where the um over here where we’ve got u my husband’s black stone and I don’t know the nothing is a normal grill we’ve got a black stone and some other pellet type grill um I yeah I don’t think we need it much bigger than this screened but then I want some steps coming down and I want a platform and I still want the roof coming um at least past this outlet here um yeah he could even have his grills down below but this is where I have all my grow lights and everything like that so I would like a covered area to be working um like right now I’m separating my Dalia it’s a big mess um so I would like a covered area to do it because when it’s raining I can’t do anything so I haven’t been able to separate Dalia’s most of the week or I could have it you know as the roof line extends could have the the deck end the covered patio end right here have couple steps down and then you know have this as a a kind of a working area i’ve got water here and I’ve got water there so that’s what’s important to me is easy access to water um but this is farther from the garage so what I like about things right here is when I’m hardening off it’s just real easy to stand in the doorway and move things and if it started raining I could just move things um yeah so I’m I’m still debating how to lay out the plans um when we start our deck the other thing and this is probably after the deck is done want to put a greenhouse with the shed attached to it right here have it can just kind of join in with the rose garden and then have either new gardens or have those raised beds um prettied up you know maybe put a a um gravel path around them uh or just tear them all out and start all over but that’s the plan for this backyard and I’ll just show you real quick the existing shed so this is the existing shed so if the shed is gone um then we’ll probably just extend the uh driveway so if we ever do get an RV or anything like that uh we can park it back here we did have it wired we used to have RVs we used to have a fifth wheel so we did you know leave it wired so we could get um some you know uh 50 amp power uh back here if we did an RV so that’s the plan this is where they dump all my dirt and that is the back garden and you can see it’s just still a work in progress okay that’s it thank you so much for watching and we will see you next

  1. You have created a fun, never ending project ! Your peony placement caught my eye and from my experience and dozens of peonies you might want to consider giving them 3-4 feet of growing space – they will spread into a nice circle as they age. I have some that were from family stock going back 75 years. Have fun!!

  2. Hi Happy Saturday… so beautiful thanks for sharing, you have done an amazing garden, can’t wait to see them all blooming. ❤

  3. Lisa, EVERYONE has weeds right now. We just had snow 2 days ago, it melted the next day in zone 6a, Ohio. Tulips 🌷 look gorgeous and we had the same couple of weeks with the weather yuk! We keep bird suet cages hanging during the cold season. This keeps sooooo many birds on our property. They stay for the warm seasons and eat the bugs. I just bought a rose and wondered what you thought of it, Midnight in Paris. I wanted something that blooms all summer. I have 2 Cathedral Bells that I love but they shatter after cutting for a vase.

  4. I can’t believe you just have rando ranunculus growing happily. I don’t dare even attempt since that’s above my skill level!

Nice to meet you. I’m trying to find more cottage gardeners in my zone to follow. (7a St. Louis)!
