It was theorized my fishbone calathea “unmutated” that part of the plant back to its original form. When I went to separate, I did indeed have to crack the small/different bits off the main plant, so that supports the theory for sure.
Anyway despite ruthlessly removing all soil and separating and repotting both plants are thriving.
The OG has exploded because it had an overgrown middle root ball from its OG tiny nursery pot that was rotting in the centre so it’s happier now too.
