The Black Bear, a 17th-century pub on Whitchurch High Street, has unveiled its new Courtyard Garden.

Once a plain car park, the space has been reimagined by head gardener Michael Kemp into a “peaceful, beautifully planted oasis.”

Jerry Bunning, owner of The Black Bear, said: “If you’re the sort of person who likes to discover something quiet, beautiful, and tucked away behind the everyday, I think you’ll enjoy this.

“It’s a space full of care and quiet detail – a proper sanctuary just off the High Street.”

The courtyard features brick-edged beds, climbing vines, and fragrant seasonal plants.

Each table in the courtyard is surrounded by its own miniature garden.

Mr Kemp said: “Gardens never stay still.

“You plant one thing and it goes bonkers, another dies – but that’s the charm.

“It’s always changing.”

Guests are welcomed by the scent of daphne as they pass from the pub to the garden, which also hosts Virginia creeper, Pittosporum, and Mexican Lobelia.

Much of the upkeep for the garden comes from Lynne Gilmore, the pub’s head housekeeper.

Ms Gilmore said: “I start early.

“It’s peaceful, quiet, and I’m still learning every day.

“I never imagined how much I’d love it.”

The space is open to all, with no booking required.

Mr Bunning added: “It’s not just about flowers and plants.

“It’s about care, attention, and the quiet things that make a place feel like it matters.”
