REDDING, Calif. — The Shasta County Probation Department is witnessing growth not only in the youth they rehabilitate, but also in their flourishing garden. The department’s Grow Program recently held a pop-up event where children involved in the program sold fresh produce they helped cultivate.
The harvest included peaches, plums, tomatoes, and fresh herbs, showcasing the hard work of the young participants. Community members who stopped by were greeted with smiles and enthusiasm as the children interacted and shared their experiences.
Assistant Chief Probation Officer Eric Jones emphasized the program’s impact, saying,
So we’ve got a tremendous remarkable farm growing in our west recreation yard and the crops have just been overflowing, so we decided just to provide some pop-up opportunities for people to stop by and pick up some fresh produce.”
Jones explained that the program aims to let the kids see their work from start to finish, engage with the community, and learn how to handle money through donations. He noted that the program, which has been running for several years, now includes a farm with dozens of different plants, goats, and chickens.
While the official farm stand is not yet open, the department encourages the community to watch for more pop-up events as their crops continue to thrive.
