Hi Laura, I've grown all 3 of these rugosas over the past 20 years here in New Zealand, they're all gorgeous. Be aware if they're on their own roots they do sucker and spread, forming thickets (not as crazy as the sumacs though!) The fall color is incredible – butter yellow with hints of orange, which the red hips glow against. Can't wait to see how they look in your landscape, especially in the fall! Great choices ๐ If you want even bigger hips, get Scabrosa – it's a soft pink with hips about 50% bigger than the other ones, really gorgeous!
Rosehip jelly, is delicious. I put a clove on the top of the jelly before sealing the jar
A super dense ALL evergreen border would look so beautiful to close in the area between the fences and the brick pillars. I really like the mini tours you have been giving while you're in the area. Thanks GA!
Those hips must mature to ripe and squishy before harvest and then they taste delicious!
These are considered invasive on LI, NY. Dangit.
You have turned me onto so many beautiful plants. Thank you and your team for all your hard work.
It amazes me how Laura can dig holes exactly at the correct depth every single time!! But I guess that she has dug her share of holes. She is still an expert at all things gardening. And she is a pretty great Mom!!
Sometimes, while watching you plant, I feel like a little kid wishing time could go faster so I can see the new plants at maturity.
The Rosa Regossa grows wild here in zone 5b in Newfoundland, Canada. Itโs very hearty!!
They are beautifully fragrant.
Love it x ( u k )
I love the "talk throughs" that you do, it really helps my own process as to plant placement. I could watch you all day planting things but I learn so much more when you go through it all. Thanks so much from AZ๐
Beautiful placement of the roses.
Question ~~ Have you ever gotten everything planted from your stash piles in the high tunnels? So you go into winter without any plants to be over-wintered in the high tunnels? Just curious if you've ever run out of plants?
I must have missed the size of the Ragosa roses and their height. Where could one order a Ragosa rose? Are the ones planted over by the white fence going to block your cameras or do they not get that big? I love rose hips. My mom made rose hip jam for my daughter when she was younger and to this day, itโs her favorite memory. She would place that on a piece of toast in the morning before school and now as a 28 year-old it is her comfort zone on a cold winter day with a cup of coffee.
Great explanation of rose root stock. Dr. Huey is a single red bloom and another popular rootstock is Fortuniana which has a white bloom. A few decades ago grafted roses were more popular commercially because growers could produce a rose bush faster. Own root roses have enjoyed a resurgence of late I believe due in part to the growing popularity of โantiqueโ varieties particularly in the southern zones.
You are so fortunate to have Paul. He did beautiful work. Things have really changed this year. I bet he is already doing Christmas lights
Anybody else watching Laura trying to decide where to place plants, talking more to herself . . . Sit here and think to yourself . .yup, yup! I agree!? Love it.
Oh my goodness the Rosa rugosa is gorgeous, very thorny but gorgeous ๐คฉ!
Kids are so much fun, being outside all day! Have a blessed day ๐๐ป๐๐ค
Another great addition to your property. Looks beautiful already.
Rosa Rugosas are extremely invasive here in Finland, they are in fact illegal to grow, sell or plant. However, they are the rose of my childhood, as they used to be very popular and planted (or spread) everywhere. The scent is incredible and very nostalgic to me! I hope they behave better for you. ๐
I LOVE those roses and the Black Lacy Elderberry placement! I learn so much from you!! Thank you Laura!
Laura I have a lavender tree in a pot that I can't get to bloom. What do you suggest?๐ข
Looks fantastic!!
The hips on these roses are amazing! I canโt wait to see you use them in fall and winter arrangements. I am intrigued by the hints of your plans to fill in the gate area.

Great video! Thank you
When I was a kid I did gardening for our neighbour. They had 3 or 4 of those Regosa roses in their side garden. They were absolutely huge and the hips were amazing! ๐
When I was a kid my mom always gave USA spoonful of rosehip syrup in the winter to prevent colds. Lots of vitamin c
Did your roses ever grow from the seeds you planted?
We used to go to a Fairgrounds that had a Rosa rugosa huge hedge 5-7 feet tall / great green leaves and pretty flowers, but the fragrance! Oh they smelled glorious. It was 40 yrs ago that I saw those and never forgot them.
I like seeing your thought process as you decided where to put everything.
11:14 my goodness your chitalpa is magnificent. I have one but itโs just not blooming yet, lots of foliage but no buds. Do you fertilize yours after the biotone? I am in 9b central Florida, do you think the humidity might be part of the problem? Itโs beautiful and itโs staying in my garden but I was wondering if you might have any thoughts, being a beginner gardener myself Iโm at a loss keeping my plants alive is a win.
Hello Laura and Aaron, those roses are going to be beautiful when they are blooming. Laura and Aaron have you thought of planting a couple more red maples to the entrance of the dirt lands on each side of the lane up by your entrance instead of the wheeeping cedar? I think that it would help continue the feel of what you have up and down your driveway. Just a thought!!!!!
Does your parents give you deals on all the plants you buy from them.
๐นWant to learn more about DR HUEY rose that Laura mentioned? I found a YT video that shares the interesting history and insights on grafted roses. Search or highlight and drop the video title into search bar: "The Tenacious Dr. Huey. Good News for Rose Suckers."
