I get asked a lot, Melissa, why do you leave these golden broccoli flowers here? Like, why haven’t you cleared that from your bed with the squash and the kale? And uh here’s why. [Music]

  1. Bolted Broccoli & Beautiful Bees 😉🐝

Since broccoli can cross-pollinate with other members of Brassica oleracea, like cabbage and cauliflower, we don’t save the seeds for future years in our regenerative garden.

✨I do however, save the seeds to make broccoli sprouts to enjoy for their high concentrations of sulforaphane which is full of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties.

Yet, the best part of letting our broccoli plants bolt is seeing how much they are loved by our local pollinators.

We still keep the soil active with squash, cilantro, carrots, and kale growing underneath the bolted broccoli so when it’s time to pull the broccoli seeds, the garden bed is still full and happy with plants.

    Smiles,
    Melissa ❤️🌱

  2. I try to let everything go to seed.
I plant those seeds next year.
The more you collect and plant your own grown seeds, the hardier those plants become to your specific garden.

  3. I let my kale go to flowers and then it just seeds itself and I never have to plant kale again.
