I notice this huge hole the other day while treating my lawn. I recently got an irrigation installed so I’m not sure if it’s from that. What is the best way to fill this back up? I’m located in MD which is a cool season area.

Are you asking how to fill a hole with dirt?

  2. Do you have negative grading going on causing drainage towards your foundation?

If you think it’s animal related, you should put down some wire or form of barrier, then bury it with dirt. Prevents mice and stuff from going further

  4. This might be a better question for r/landscaping……but I think some sort dirt should work. But I don’t know how deep it goes or if it’s an indication of a bigger problem

Just buy a few bags of dirt from the store. You’ll probably need 1 more bag than what you’d think

  6. If it’s from your sprinkler system wouldn’t it be wet

if its suddenly appearing, then you might have a leak.

    Is it always wet?

I’d run your irrigation and make sure it’s not a water leak, first.

Good chance it’s a leak if it’s a new irrigation system.. had the same thing happen to me. Thought it was a rodent digging kept filling it with dirt until I decided to put a camera there and discovered the leak

Looks like the water from your downspout may be collecting there and eroding it. Go out and look at it next time it rains, if so it needs to be directed away from the house. Either an extension or regrade the slope.

My instinct is to dig and find out what is causing the problem. Unless this is a new build with poor backfill. Either way, I’d be curious.

  12. Good chance it’s mice/rats. Dealing with this myself.

That’s what’s doing it. Try to direct the water away from the foundation

  14. If you just got irrigation installed and there is a head or joint in that area it is likely leaking and causing a sink hole. I had this when mine was first installed. It was right under where I had a tree removed so at first I explained it away as the ground settling, but it turned out there was a leak and the water was the cause. If you fill it, tamp it down, and it comes back… call your irrigation company.

If you haven’t noticed it before and you recently had an irrigation system installed I would contact the installer immediately. You could have a leak the could cause some expensive damage.

When you fill it don’t pack it at the top. Fill like halfway or less then pack. If you can’t dig up dirt from your property then get the cheapest top soil bag from home depot
