  1. I thought my fig trees had winter killed. Had them in big tubs stored in my tent shed over winter. They were 4-5 ft tall 4 y/o Chicago Hardy and Turkish Brown. I planted them in ground in late May but never saw any life….until early July I found 1 shoot popping up from the base of the turkey. A few weeks later another single shoot off the Chicago. I pruned these 5 ft trees back almost to the ground and it looks like they're gonna make it after all. Just gonna mulch super heavily this fall to hopefully get them to fully leaf out next year. 🤞

  2. The Pacific Northwest has been just about the opposite this year. Not a lot of overly hot days and I got an extremely late start so we're just now starting to harvest things.

  3. It's been a great year for figs from my one tree and now it's even producing a second wave of fruit. Life is good.

  4. So glad to hear you say you can just forget about some stuff. I will plant some plants that will be frost free and a few other but willing to just say the heck with my tomatoes as they really aren’t doing much. Love you have some pumpkins to be able to harvest and eat. Wish I had grown some. Your figs look great. Need to know what kind you are growing. Ours here in the desert aren’t very good. You do great with home school. I would have been bad at that. So glad to see you again. Hearts and Flowers coming your way. ❤️💐

  5. I mostly grew tomatoes this year. I have gotten my fill. Water in my area is very expensive. So I have quit watering. I am going to make a compost pile with my tomato plants and I think plant carrots. We shall see. I am a one person household, so don't need much. Just thoughts. Love Bev from Oklahoma

  6. Oh, Jess, I am sooooo there. The hands have been thrown up for about a week or so. This summer in Texas has been gloriously beautiful; not too hot, not too dry. The grass, which normally is a crunchy brown well before August 1, still retains some green. But yes, Texas being Texas, the heat had to show up sometime, and it did with a vengence the last week of July. I can see a huge difference in the garden in just one week. Things are getting fried, even though I water daily. Things are getting diseased. So yes, I have thrown up my hands. But I know it's only for a month (or just a little more) and the temps will be cooling down, and a fall garden will be growing green and lush, once again. I used to be a summer girl, in Ohio. But Texas has given me a new appreciation for fall. 🙂❤

  7. Sprinkling cinnamon on plants rids of bugs/insects. They hate the smell & taste of cinnamon. Keps plants untouched and is natural/healthy for plants. My gardens look amazing!!

  8. Missed you Jess! You just made my day by posting today.
1 fig tree was not enough figs for grandson and I, so put in 2 more 2 years ago and 2 more this year. Maybe next year I'll have enough to make fig jam in addition to fresh eating.
    Blessings

  9. 13:58 Jess I heard that if you put geraniums out that the Japanese beetles will eat them and die. Has anyone tried that?

  10. TY for the tour. I am 70 and can say I have never had a fresh fig. Your trees and pond are beautiful!

  11. I was feeling a little down today, but as soon as I saw your video pop up, I knew my day was about to turn around. Those raspberries look amazing! It’s such a comfort to relate to someone who finds true peace and joy in the garden. No matter what life throws at us, the garden is always there—a little sanctuary through it all. Thank you for sharing your light.❤

  12. I love figs! Did you know fig leaves can be used for tea, etc.? I'm feeling the burnout too but not ready to stop lol

  13. So much about my garden that is beyond my ability to do now, but it is glorious. Making decisions about what i am going to grow next year.

  14. It must be the year of the Japanese beetle! I am in Southwestern Ontario Canada and I have seen more beetles than I ever have in 40 years of gardening. They have even been sticking to my line dried laundry. What is surprise to fold laundry and see a beetle in the folds….yuck! Hopefully they do not cause lasting damage to some of my trees and perennials. Thank you for sharing your life.❤

  15. Oh Jess. I missed your videos so very much! This made my day after watering my garden on a 93° day with a bit of wind… so thank you for posting! ❤

  16. I sure do love volunteers. I always think, “Look at you. You really want to grow.” I think it’s a great idea to dig up the volunteers and plant them in your garden. They have a great head start. Thank you Jess for sharing and helping me to keep perspective. I think sometimes, I loose sight of the joy of my little garden because I am older and cannot do all the things that need to be done. It’s still super hot here in Texas. You always help me to pause, take a breath and say, it’s ok. If the Lord woke me up this morning, it’s a good day, regardless what needs to be done. “This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it”. God bless you Jess and your sweet family.❤️✝️🙏

  17. Hi! I count the days down in August lol. I'm such a Fall person, and being in Texas, August is our hottest, driest month typically. So I'm ready for the months that end in ER lol ❤ So glad to see you again. You were on my mind today.

  18. My hands have been up for awhile now. On top of health issues we haven’t had rain in weeks. Our well and dry well are dry. We been having to haul water so we can do dishes, flush the toilets, laundry, and shower. The garden kinda got put on the back burner. Thank goodness for farmers markets.

  19. I just got my first handful of cherry tomatoes for the season to eat with supper tonight. It has been hot and dry up here but the nights are starting to cool down. Figs root really easy from cuttings so save the prunings and you could easily have a fig forest in a couple years.

  20. I would love to homestead but would love to do it with a few different families. After watching you and other homesteaders, it's a lot of work for one family and I would still love to have a life outside of homesteading. I would love to have maybe 40 acres with maybe 4 other small families for us to share the responsibilities and help with burnout.

  21. Living here in Mississippi heat and humidity is the norm for summer. Getting hotter every year and gardening gets harder.

  22. I know about the murderous heat (zone 9a, Georgia). I'm pretty sure you can propagate your fig trees. I'd love to grow those sword beams for my neohews!

  23. I pulled out so much ..but a few things still going on..cucumbers .,Peppers.,melons
    But I pulled plenty 🌱🌱💚
    Houston,Tx

  24. Was delighted to see a video from you today! Love that dress. That green is gorgeous on you. Those huge beans! I tried to grow some a few years back and it did not work. 🫤 So need to try it again. They are lovely.

  25. I miss the ancient fig tree at my former home. I used to pick the figs and give them to the neighbor kids or anyone visiting and tell them "This is food that Jesus ate!"

  26. I'm harvesting my Flaming Fresno Chilis right now. There is a yellow jacket nest right next to them. I have made peace with them as I dodge and weave to harvest for pickled peppers. The wild garden is sometimes the best you can do. Give yourself grace and enjoy the harvest!

  27. That time of the growing season, when the garden is left to go wild, I always feel like I'm foraging. I get tremendous satisfaction from harvesting at this time. Another time I feel the same is when I harvest from the area I call my chaos garden. That's where I have put all my culled seeds into a jar and then just broadcast them somewhere else and let nature run its course.
