My wife and I recently purchased a home, and I just noticed that the trees in the front yard are badly choked by a rope that they have long overgrown. Any advice on what to do to guarantee the wellbeing of the trees after removing the rope?

Don’t cut into the tree to remove it, if the tree doesn’t want to let it go don’t force it. There’s a chance it’ll recover but it has been permanently compromised at that point, there isn’t any fixing it.
Take a knife and cut/chisel through one spot on the loop that’s girdling the tree. Then work the rope out carefully to avoid tearing the bark too much. I would then recommend some pruning at the tops/ends of the affected branches to lessen the weight load.
LURKERS: this is why proper staking is important, and one reason why straps should be removed (in most cases) after 1 year.
