A recent visit to Magnolia Gardens reminded me how magical the surroundings are during any season of the year. There’s something about both cultivated and rambling gardens that makes you slow down and fully open your senses, which is what this week’s poem celebrates.

The Path Unfolded: Magnolia Gardens

At the gate set free your mind

Depart the asphalt road

Turn toward the river, live oak lined

Into the garden’s gold

Down this path, the heart is free

And Nature heeds its mark

Discard the map and touch the tree

Its compass in the bark

Run calloused palm upon the wood

And set off on your stroll

You’ll only find things right and good

Along this blossomed knoll

A feast for all that can be seen

With nature-tuned eye

So come and let the peacock preen

As songbirds swiftly fly

Set forth amid magnolia bloom,

Camellia’s scarlet leaf

Cast off your veil of tamed gloom

And shed your mortal grief

Now you hear the bird song trill

Cross verdant sweeps of lawn

Hold out your arm and beckon, still

And soon approach the fawn

The tide will sweep the river ridge

As sleek boats slowly glide

The garden path leads to the bridge –

Your senses are your guide.
