local onestop landscape shop located in Statesville but Jason and his team delivering to all of Lake Norman and what a gorgeous morning it is getting a showcasing of probably what are your neighbors jealous of your yard do they come over and like chat with you and like get pick your brain on things how what’s it like with them yeah uh sometimes um especially when we first moved in uh people always wondering what I was up to over here and uh yeah the first two years we were here there was always a constant project going um curious people stopping in but then um sometimes I wonder how long they could tolerate me having to skid steer in my front yard so but uh but yeah after um uh three years most of the major projects are done uh now it’s just time to sit back and enjoy it enjoying it nicely on this beautiful morning but the sun is shining this week jason give us the cautionary tale what do we need to do to make sure that our plants shrubs our trees everybody’s uh healthy and and doing well this week on these hot summer days yeah so um you know fortunately we had a good bit of rain before this heat wave so uh that really helps the lawn out um because you don’t want to be in a deficit going into a heat dome or a big uh uh long streak of 90 plus days so so all that rain really did help us um if you can water your lawn um you know I would recommend doing it about every other day while we’re having this uh heat and that should be done in the earliest hours of the morning um ideally you’re going to finish up right about daybreak um so you know you’re going to want to set some timers uh of course if you have irrigation system you can do that yourself uh through an app or whatnot but um but yeah having that early morning watering that that ends about daylight uh is going to be the best for your lawn and um a trick that I learned throughout the years I didn’t know about this until maybe 5 or 10 years ago is if you do have an irrigation system um when it’s extremely hot like this it’s good to run each zone in the afternoon as well or even midday just for a few minutes to help cool the grass down so while that water is not actually really making its way in there to the roots what it’ll do is it’ll cool the lawn down keep it from scorching um but yeah it’s um you know it’s time to do a little bit of watering just to ensure that all that rainfall we got is going to carry you through this heat wave you know uh oh sorry well I do have a I do have a listener submitted a question talking about lawns um so they want to know they said they have high fescue sod and they’re getting giving it plenty of water but the hot weather is starting to brown what should they do so is that what you were talking about the that afternoon watering schedule yeah I mean that that could possibly be it um it also could possibly be uh fungus in their lawn um so they want to pay attention to uh any patterns they might see so if it’s an overall uh browning across the top or whatnot um that’s probably what you call drought stress or heat stress um but with all the rain we’ve had unless they just happen to be in one of those pockets to where we didn’t have a lot of rain um I would look towards uh you know uh circular patches in your lawn they usually start small uh they can be varying sizes anywhere from 6 in up to you know 5t across and that’s a sign of having uh fungus in your lawn which most likely in a turf type fescue in our area is brown patch um that is very common this time of year high temperatures um when temperatures are above 60 consistently at night and up into the 80s plus in the daytime uh that is a thing that comes around so uh check out that also make sure there’s no grub damage there um but you know if you can’t figure that out on your own we’re glad to help you at your own landscape supply okay Jason one time I was standing in my yard and I was watering um my trees my plants my stuff and I was wondering why my neighbor was staring at me so weirdly it was cuz I think back now I was spraying the leaves i don’t think you’re supposed to spray the tree leaves right you’re supposed to you’re supposed to just do like the roots at the bottom is that right yeah yeah so really the only uh plants that like you know that need their leaves wet are tropical plants um you know just because they’re used to that humid environment but uh but yeah um what you’re going to want to do is aim to water the roots uh the roots are where it uptakes all the water and puts it into the uh you know the different systems within the plant and uh yep so water the uh water the roots ideally again uh mornings are the best if you can possibly do that um uh the afternoons or uh or early evening is also good too uh this time of year especially because it will dry enough before it gets to the evening hours uh the main thing is you just don’t want water on the leaves during the evening because that does invite the fungus not only for your lawn but it also could for your plants too things like powdery mildew uh where it looks like it has a white powdery substance on the leaves that’s something that shows up that can easily be treated but it can be avoided by watering at the right time uh okay so so keeping in mind that this the tropical plants there are some people with the uh uh palm trees and stuff like that’s the tropical one right yep yeah yeah yeah um it’s you know palms are more trees they’re not going to want the uh uh they don’t need to be watered on their leaves um you know palms are one of those plants we get asked about a lot and there’s only one that I really trust in our area called a windmill palm and it gets a trunk on it gets up to about 15 ft in our area so um they are a little bit harder to grow here than they would be further south uh we were down uh our family and I went down to Savannah this past weekend and uh there’s tropical stuff everywhere and um it it’s hot here you know but it is sweltering down in Savannah right now so um so you know just uh take care uh extra precaution you know being outside make sure you drink plenty of fluids um but yeah this uh the heat is here and uh just doing a little bit of watering and staying ahead of things will really help you in the long run i I think you told us previously one of the other things that while it looks great it also is you know utility and keeping the the beds uh have their mo keep their moisture are are is the mulch and all that kind of stuff right that’s all intentional and that actually is good and helps the plants is that right yes yes so having a uh 2 to 3 in layer of mulch um most of the time can be your preference uh is really going to help to to hold that water in there um think of it kind of like a blanket um so it’s it’s going to you know deflect the sun’s rays from drying up that soil uh below it also regulates the temperature so you don’t have those extreme uh highs and lows uh because roots like to have a pretty consistent temperature no matter the time of the year um and yeah it helps that keeps that water from evaporating so um you know having a good layer of mulch not too much though um you can put too much out there um so maintaining about 2 to three inches a year and so what that means is if you do it every year uh pine straw included um you want to um put about half as much as you uh have down on the ground so if you have a if you’re looking for a two to three inch layer of mulch every year you want to put down a 1 to two inch layer um the best time to do it is in the winter spring but really any time of the year will be beneficial for you we’re talking with Jason Drum of Drum Landscape Supply drum landscapesupply.com jason his team located in Statesville uh but delivering to all of Lake Norman jason when we chatted with you last week you were there at your nursery and you were showing us that uh white was it the white marble stone you guys got in is that what it was yeah yeah that was some bright uh really pretty stuff out there um something I’ve been looking for for a while for a good consistent uh vendor on that um when I bring in a new product I want to make sure we’re going to have it available for everybody but yeah those white marble chips will really help uh to keep some of that heat down you know we talked a little bit about um the the natural stone and how people are wanting to use decorative gravels more and more as the mulch um it does help to conserve moisture it also does help to regulate soil temperatures but you want to make sure you’re not putting a really dark colored rock out in the bright sunlight and then having plants that just can’t stand that heat so uh those lighter colored rocks um our colonial rock which is a mix of grays and and uh off-white and a little bit of color in there a little bit of reds those can really help to deflect some of the heat away um but yeah what I hope to do that day but my uh temperature gun wasn’t working was to take a um uh a temperature reading on the different gravel so you can actually see what the temperatures are so maybe we can do that on Friday there you go jason Drum Drum Landscape Supply your local one-stop landscape shop jason is team located in Statesville delivering to all of Lake Norman jason we so look forward to chatting with you on Friday checking in because this is going to be a
