I have a bunch of wildly different houseplants all living together on this table. I’ve also learned a bit about mycorrhizal networks and more generally how plants communicate with their roots. I was wondering if — instead of separate pots — would it be safe for the plants if I planted them together in one uh like giant big pot or bed thingy?? I wonder if they would like to talk with each other through their roots n be less “lonely”, for lack of a better term. Or will it create competition, and will they fight for space and resources, and so should be kept in their own pots?? Please advise, thank you 🙏

I love where your head is and am curious what others think now as well.
Maybe some would like being together more than others. Even within these networks in nature you will see specific plants grow together. Mushrooms particularly like specific trees so maybe plants would have preferences too 🤔

I’d look at their individual water, moisture requirements and go from there

    I definitely would not.

Do an experiment using cuttings? Sure!

If you’re a new beginner, read up on soil needs of all your plants. Don’t fall for the “indoor potting mix” marketing scheme. Find a DIY mix that works pretty well across all of them.

Personally, I’d worry about root rot. Some might work together better than others.

No, mixed houseplant planters rarely work – you’ll end up with a few that do ok, one that will probably take over and the rest will die.

If you’re going to experiment with combining anything – make sure whatever gets planted together has the same watering requirements.

I would say; have some cuts and root them in water. Put the baby’s individual in a hydroculture pot (all same highs) with hydro substrate. Then put those pots in a large wide pot or bowl together with hydro-substrate, special hydro nutrients and a waterlevel meter. In this way you do need to worry about different water/nutrition needs. Only light…😊🌱

I’m a big believer in mixing the plants together with the same needs. I love to create Art with them. Do your research first to see what works and experiment with different types. I can show you many mixed successfully completed pots. I have a pot of pothos with a dracaena and purple oxalis in it 24 inches across and deep planted together more than a decade. Mix them up definitely.
