Apologies for the awful diagram, but I was thinking of placing an acer from a pot into the ground where the red mark is … I have read that they do not like too much sun and not too much wind, so I think this would be the best spot, but open to suggestions.

Do you know the type of Acer

Highly recommend figuring out what type of acer if you are concerned about placement. If you don’t know the name, Google lens should be able to give you a good pointer. Once you’ve identified it, you can read up on what that specific type will tolerate.

They hate wind when they’re young, but they become tolerant of it with age.

That would be a grand spot for it. The amount of sun we get in Ireland will rarely be too much for it, more of a concern is drying out. Put it in a square hole to prevent roots circling.
