It might be tempting when you have insects you don’t want in your yard to reach for a spray can. But there are more humane and effective ways to control them without harming other wildlife, and people too. Start with prevention. If it’s mosquitoes you’re after, empty all standing water on your property regularly, even the smallest amount. And products like Mosquito Dunks are naturally occurring bacterium that prevent mosquitos from laying eggs in standing water but are considered benign for other critters. Likewise, note that those sticky bands meant to prevent lantern flies from crawling up trees also catch and kill all kinds of beneficial insects and birds. There are humane approaches for so-called “nuisance” animals like bats, raccoons and squirrels, too.
