Lots of saw dust piling up at the bottom of my front yard tree. Had the tree looked at by my city since it’s technically a parkway tree. They said it’s totally fine and the sawdust is not an issue. Does this pose a problem? Should I mitigate the issue somehow? I’m guessing ants, since I see them on the tree sometimes.

There are two solutions: either it’s a wood-eating insect that makes sawdust or it’s a hole or an opening in the trunk and the birds come and turn everything over to find something to eat… look carefully if you can see where exactly the sawdust comes from I could tell you more

That is 100% carpenter ants. There is a nest in the tree. They just remove rotted wood. They don’t actually damage healthy trees. So it has some rot somewhere. Not to say the tree will not last another 20 years. If you go out at night you will see them.

Carpenter ants are slowly eating it sway and one day it will be on top of a car. Take it down asap.

May be the city’s tree in an easement. Verify and if so, notify them ASAP.
