My little garden really took off and I decided on slowly turning the entire front lawn into a mini farm. Got a lot of slow drive bys with dirty looks, and a few people even slow down to yell “that’s a lot of work for nothing” at me lol. It’s cool tho. I know it doesn’t look like much now, but I’m super excited to see what it looks like this time next year!
Started off digging and flipping the sod before laying double cardboard, compost, and mulch down. Halfway through I said NAH and just did triple layers of cardboard instead of flipping the sod. I guess it’ll be an experiment to see which half has less weeds.

Zone 5b!
Your neighbors sound like well-adjusted individuals. Looks great!
The neighbors need to trim that tree/shrub net to their house.
This is what I say to neighbours who appreciate my efforts: thank you very much. This is what I say to neighbours who don’t get what I do: When you buy my house, you can do whatever you want with it; make me an offer.
That’s indeed a lot of work for nothing…. For flipping the sod. Glad you turn to just cardboard and mulch in the end. That save a lot of efforts.
I can’t imagine stopping what I’m doing to comment on someone else’s house in a negative way. They must have a lot of time on their hands.
I’m sure my neighbors gave my yard some serious side eye the first couple of growing seasons, but now I’m asked all the time how to get started planting flower beds/cutting down on lawn area.
I like your miniature fence you put around the garden!
Your neighbors are dummies. This is awesome
I’m in the Boston burbs. Good people out here, but personal tastes run a bit traditional. I know I’ve annoyed a few neighbors as well
Looks Great
Luckily for them, it’s not their property. 🙂
Anyways, I love it op. Keep it up! Mother nature thanks you also.
It’s so beautiful! 🙂
5b in Ontario and managed to control some persistent and hardy weeds with a layer of quality cardboard and mulch. Had some creep back in due to my own negligence but the space you’re working with is way more manageable. Could recommend silphium terebinthinaceum and filipendula for some really strong natives that will not be affected by weeds. My issue after 9 years is how successive the space is, once the herbaceous perennials are established I have trees and bushes popping up everywhere. Depending on your area you might want to preempt this by selecting woody shrubs and planting them among your herbaceous perennials. Helped me to let it go on it’s own for 1-2 seasons in a row here and there, then pivot to what’s working. Looks great.
I say this respectfully as someone who has neighbors that don’t agree on my maintaining of my garden. FUCK EM.
So what, they are probably zionist anyway. Just think about what a fascist mindset it is to yell at someone while driving by because you don’t like their yard. Next they will be suing to have you sterilized so you can’t have children.
Fuck them. You are doing a great job.
I think it was Big Daddy Kane who once said, just brush your shoulder off, because that’s as close to you as the haters are ever going to get.
I have my share of neighbors who scoff at our yard too, but then there are the people who stop by and admire or tell me our flowers brings them joy. Trust me when I say you have some secret admirers you just don’t know about yet.
It’s so beautiful. 😻 Keep up the good work!
I wish some of my neighbors would put some effort in their yard lol. I think it looks great!
I like it. I wish I had the time or energy to go full rip up the front yard, but I’ve committed to a slow and steady route.
“A lot of work for nothing”? Pretty sure the butterflies, bees, and birds disagree.
Plus there is the personal joy of seeing a garden change with the seasons, the excitement of watching blossoms open and colors pop… If these people are getting bent about some colorful flowers, I guess they’ve never enjoyed getting a bouquet and have never sent one to someone else to cheer them up? Hm. I hope life starts getting brighter some day for these sorry souls!
Well I kinda hate your neighbors
What do you mean a few people slowed down to yell? There’s no way lol
deffo better than a boring monochromatic lawn, but that little white fence is kitschy and next year consider the ultimate height of all the plants you’re growing, plan a nice little slope to your flower beds, small ones in front, keep the window visible,
I love your garden yard! I’m taking notes and screencaps here…
The neighbors are jelly. You get to tend a variety of plants instead of a boring old carpet of grass that just sits there soaking in water and (god forbid) chemicals.
I think the only excuse for grass is if you need a court for outdoor sports. That’s something different.
Fug ‘em.
That’s why I love that I don’t live in an HOA neighborhood. I can do nearly anything I want with my yard and my neighbors can go suck a fat one if they don’t like it.
I want a sign in my yard that says “pay my mortgage, and I MIGHT consider your opinion” 😂
Looks great
Looks amazing! Keep it up.
Well, I guess it’s a good thing it’s not their lawn!
Well done 🍻
I’ve gotta get my “Native/Pollinator” sign put up.
This stuff is just another type of decorating. I suck at decorating. I know I could better at primping. But I try. And I’ve never had this many monarchs. 💚
If someone said something like that while you were using the hose, would it be illegal to spray them?
“That’s a lot of work for nothing” I can’t imagine believing something like that.
Even if it’s true… is bird watching a lot of work for “nothing”? Is reading a book a lot of work for “nothing”? Are hobbies a lot of work for “nothing”?
I feel like that’s a sad way to approach life.
I did the sod, compost and mulch thing this year and was amazed how easy it was. The cardboard really did disappear quickly too!
You’ve gotta know that none of those douchebags has ever so much as picked up a shovel or a seed packet. Anyone who cares about gardening would at least recognize the effort even if they didn’t care for the result.
this looks SO good! and orderly-so who could complain? ignore those drive by idiots- they are the ones who put suburbia to shame! let them go home to their wifebeater undershirts and beer and mow their little squares of grass!
