Purchased the house with this last year. Going to try and get a company out to open up the concrete for the tree. I have no idea how much more this tree can grow, how much space should we give it? What else should we consider? One concern I have is if the base will be weak and prone to fall.

I have NEVER seen something as bad as this before.
Yeah, it’s possible that base could have some rot damage already
probably not worth it. but you can get an arborist out there to give a better assessment
You’re on the right track. Get that concrete out of there and have an arborist come and inspect the tree afterwards.
It may be fine. It may have serious problems. Can’t tell with that pad in the way.
I’d just have a chainsaw artist come out and carve it up at this point. I would be really shocked if that tree is in decent health below the concrete
If you cut it down you could leave enough stump to make a nice table.
Tree might have damage beyond what it can heal from, but no way to know without taking all the concrete out.
Looks to have been growing that way for quite awhile.
I would just drill a shit ton of holes around the trunk to loosen the concrete, connect all holes and leave it be, the trunk will push outwards as soon as he has a chance against the concrete in his way
There must not have been a single breeze between when that pad was put in and when this pic was taken. I imagine the first good wind storm would cause the tree to sway and heave and crack the slab. No?
That’s structural concrete. It’s holding up the tree.
Seriously though, my mind is absolutely blown that someone would do that. How short-sighted does one have to be to do that? Was it a flip?
I’m not sure it will be able to recover from the damage to the root zone, I would think the removal would be cheaper than the concrete work
I would cut the tree and leave in the concrete
Why are people so unrelentingly stupid
OP off topic but where’d you get those Adirondack chairs?
Follow up after you have it opened up/inspected. I’m so curious about what you’ll find. 🙏
