Girlfriend isn’t sure what’s wrong with this plant. The leaves just started to fall off but the stem is still green

Thank you for posting to r/plantclinic!

It looks like you may be asking about a cactus or succulent. In addition to any advice you receive here, please consider visiting r/cactus r/succulents for more specialized care advice.

A common problem with cacti and succulents is etiolation. This is when a succulent stretches or becomes leggy. Reply with “!etiolation” for advice.

That pot is way too big! Possibly overwatered

They are very etiolated, so they lack a whole lot of light. That’s not for that particular plant because it’s probably sentenced to death alredy, (maybe got overwatered) but for the other one seen in the second picture at the side.

Suculents need quite a bit of light and even sun. Don’t just move It to a super sunny spot tho, the sudden change may kill the plant, try moving it little by little so It can adapt to the new light levels that Will be way healthier for It (think about being with your eyes closed in total darkness and suddenly being transported to a beach, even if we can see perfectly with daylight the sudden change might be blinding).

Same goes for the probably future deceased, try moving it slowly into a lighter spot and stop wattering fully until you see it pulling new leaves, they can’t really take water without leaves to expel It through so if you keep wattering it’ll stay in the soil and rot more the plant. I think that’s all you can do to try and save it. Good luck!

Like the auto mod said, your succulent is etiolated, meaning it’s growing way too long and skinny due to reaching for light.

As for the leaves falling off, this kind of succulent propagates by dropping leaves that root themselves so I imagine it’s a stress response.

I’d just let it go and get a plant meant for shade but if you really, really want to save it, get it a good grow light and change out the potting soil for at least half succulent mix- water retention can be an issue with these depending on the pot.
