I moved into this house last year and have hated this "fence" the previous owners put around the tree base. Everything I know says dont put stuff around the trunk. But I'm wondering at this point if I was to remove it would it ruin the tree? Unknown how long it has been here. I have removed what I could from around the trunk.

I’m assuming they put it there to stop lawnmowers hitting the tree, but it’s not really necessary and seems like it’s holding a bunch of detritus against the trunk. I’d remove it and remove enough of the detritus to show the actual root flare.

It’ll be fine to remove it

Usually these fences are in place for protection against strimmers hitting the bark or even lawnmowers, I personally see no reason to keep the fence I would just say be careful when strimmimg/lawn mowing. Hope this helps 👍🏻

You can pull it out if you don’t tear roots. Take the soil from the space insode the fence as well.
