Lewes in Bloom has begun its annual tulip appeal, seeking tax-deductible gifts of any amount from the greater community.

Last fall, volunteers from the 500-member non-profit organization planted 31,000 tulip bulbs resulting in a spectacular display of spring color.

In June, each of the gardens Lewes in Bloom tends is individually designed for a new look for the following spring.  A dedicated crew of volunteers meet weekly to plant, weed and prune in every garden from May to October.

In addition to the tulips, 10,000 annuals were also placed in over 27 different parks and locations in Lewes.

LIB’s work has been rewarded with six prestigious America in Bloom awards and two Communities in Bloom International Challenge awards for the beautification of Lewes.  The planning, planting and maintaining of flowers is accomplished by LIB members who have given 16,000 volunteer hours this year.

The Children’s Learning Garden, located adjacent to the Lewes Public Library, is host to youngsters and families on Mondays and Fridays from June to August. Last year 600 children took part in harvesting vegetables, learned about plants and insects, and listened to volunteers read books aloud at story time.
