You don’t need acres and acres of land or even a giant vegetable garden to help Minnesota’s pollinators. In fact, you don’t even need to leave St. Cloud, Sartell, or Sauk Rapids. You can live just about anywhere, even in an apartment, and still make a big difference.
There’s an upcoming event that’s not only free, but it’s packed with ideas that you can put into action right where you live, whether you’re renting a house, an apartment with a balcony, or even if you just have a tiny patch of grass out front.

Urban Pollinator Gardens Field Day is coming to the Stearns County History Museum on Saturday, August 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., and it’s open to everyone.
All you have to do is register ahead of time by clicking HERE.
So, what is the field day going to teach you?
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
It’s part of a field day series that highlights how each of us can create welcoming spaces for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, even in the middle of the city. You’ll get the chance to walk through the museum’s own pollinator garden and see what kinds of plants are attracting the most pollinator traffic right now.
You don’t need to be a gardening expert to take part. You don’t even need a green thumb.
If you’re someone who cares about the environment, wants to make a small difference, or is simply curious about what’s buzzing around your neighborhood, this event is for you.

What you’ll learn:
Which native plants are best for Minnesota’s urban spaces
How to create a pollinator-friendly garden in a small area
What to avoid if you want to help instead of harm pollinators
Simple steps to turn your lawn or flowerbed into a pollinator haven
Pollinator Field Days have been held all over the state, focusing on everything from farmlands to forests. This one is tailored to people who live in more urban areas — places like St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and beyond.
You’ll walk away with real ideas you can actually use, no matter the size of your space.

WHY IS THIS EVENT IMPORTANT?
Pollinators like bees and butterflies play a huge role in the food we eat and the flowers we love to see and smell. But their populations have been struggling. The loss of their natural habitats, and things like pesticides and climate change, have taken a toll. Now more than ever, we need to step up and do something about it.
Even one person planting the right flowers in a small pot on a patio can make a difference. Multiply that by a neighborhood and you’ve got a real impact.
