Can that container drain from the bottom? That looks very wet. Needs browns, drainage and/or airflow

Dude. Seriously. I’m trying to eat my lunch here. Yuk

You will make a lucky chicken very happy one day.

Damn, get yourself some chickens and browns my man!

The reason they’re all up on the sides is because they’re fleeing from drowning. I’d throw some absorbent browns (saw dust, wood chips, paper or cardboard shreds) in immediately, mix it up, then drill some drainage holes.

It’s way too wet in there so they’ve all come to the surface. Do what everyone said and throw some shredded cardboard in there, paper will work too, or even dried grass

What is this unholy soup? I can’t imagine the smell! You could take half of the moisture out of this and it would still be too wet. Holy shit

Too wet like other people said add some browns and drain ! Maybe let it air out for a couple days if you dont have any rain in forecast

bro it looks like a swamp, start adding cardboard on top of the compost, don’t even need to shred it

Chuck in a bunch of sawdust to deal with the moisture, dust the sides so none of those suckers can leave and then bury them in 2-3 inches of sawdust.

Curious about people’s opinions about BSFL composting, since the subject of browns came up. A few years ago when I started composting all my meat, dairy, oils, etc. with BSFL, the general consensus was “you don’t need browns because the BSFL don’t eat browns like compost worms do.” Obviously, after several tries (with drainage holes), I just ended up with OP’s smelly poo soup. I actually started as part of my master’s thesis, so I had to do some research, and there wasn’t really much research on the subject, mostly just anecdotal stuff from hobbyists and one paper hypothesizing about large scale industrial BSFL composting. Honestly, even after I started adding a ton of browns, they just got soggy, clogged the drainage holes, and I ended up with soup anyway.

Does anyone specifically compost with BSFL and have a solution for this?

That my first time ever saying this but.. i think it needs less piss!

    Your army is drowning.

I never thought that I’d say this in this sub reddit.

It looks like there is way too much moisture and ho way for it to escape – have you got holes in the bottom of it it? If so how big are they – they could be clogged up.

Make a couple of largish holes down the bottom. Add in a fair amount of wood shavings, saw dust, shredded cardboard, or straw to soak up all that moisture.

Mine started looking like this when the BSF larvae moved in. I started dumping lots of shredded paper on as much as I can. I hear they don’t eat browns, but the shredded paper is going somewhere. My only question is how do I get compost out without the larvae?

Maggots Michael. You’re eating maggots. How do they taste?

  16. drfuzzysocks

Babe that’s soup. Put some dried leaves in there for pity’s sake.
