  1. Power thru it. Im an evil gardener that gets kicks from killing pests using unorthodox methods….my goto since I love a good cigar, is a flame type cigar lighter…I know ,,,not plant safe, but my method of torching pests does no harm to the plants and provides me with a primal need to protect my stuff. However, I do continue to replant. I don't dwell on sickly plants, don't have time for that because I'm too busy "torch"ering stink bugs, lantern flies, and hornworms.

  2. My garden is just starting to produce well. I just had to top two broccoli plants that bolted. Luckily I have several more that haven't. I've never had this happen before.

  3. I’m having to power through bc summer won’t end until the last week of October! If we’re lucky. Haha!

  4. In a previous video you recommeded spreading pine shavings over the carrot seeds. It was the best thing I've ever found to get those stubborn carrot seeds to come up.

  5. What do you think of self pollinating seeds? My cucumbers didn't get pollinated right….bunch of small round and curled.!

  6. Gardening is fun. Learning how to garden has been a bit of a chore. (lol). A number of amazing successes and a number of amazing chances to learn. (read: failures). Planted some red cabbage last week and they are poking through now! 2 out of 3 ain't bad. My cucumber has only produced a couple of fruit, but the plant is auditioning for a part in "The Thing that ate the Bronx". 1 plant had taken over 3/4 of a 4×8 bed. Hundreds of blossoms, bees have been busy but not much produce. Planted 2 varieties of corn. 1 is tasty and sweet, the other never even sprouted. Same bed, soil, watering schedule, sun, etc.
Here's my plan. You keep teaching and posting, I'll keep trying, and we all keep moving forward. Thanks, Brian. Blessings to all.

  7. Short, late season here. The weather has been wild! I use shade cloth and straw mulch to keep everything happy in 100's to high 90's temps. I don't lose blossoms because of it.

I transplanted my tomatoes late because we always get a late hail storm in May. So, first week or so in June is when they go into the garden. They are slow, but steady… and looking happy and will thrive in August.

This year, I direct-seeded my okra early, because I'm usually too late. Good choice! Beans and cukes planted on time, doing great.

My squash and pumpkins were all planted later to avoid the squash bugs and vine borers. So far, so good. Had to replant the zuchinni several times and finally got one plant… still small.

Potatoes got in the ground last day for planting by moon phases per Farmers Almanac, so they will be ready in a few weeks.

  8. I’m literally rotating to the fall garden this weekend. Peas are done, beets, onions, carrots, celery, lettuce harvested.

  9. I love the gardening guide and use it all the time. Wish I could grow zuchinni and yellow squash. Don't have any bees and got tired of trying to hand pollinate them. And the squash bugs and borers are very plentiful here in Missouri. Plants rotted in my grow bags from too much rain. Had to replant. Now no rain and 90 degree heat.

  10. 100 degrees in dry San Antonio. Okra is going crazy but everything else is dead. However, I have Tomatoe and Bell Pepper seedling looking good. Planting green string beans tomorrow.

  11. Oh no! My bugs don't take a break. We have sunny and warm fall weather. A lot like summer. My fall crops are a challenge due to the bugs but also because of heatwaves. 10A zone.

  12. My tomatoes and zucchini are still producing like crazy. I started red ripper cowpeas and a few variety of squashes (one is cushaw, my favorite) last month and they are growing nicely. 😊

  13. I am surprised you didn't include lettuce. I plant lettuce throughout the whole entire growing season, one batch after the other. I have fresh lettuce from February to November here in Southern Oregon.

  14. I wish folks would put their zone in their comments!!
Zone 8a here. Very sad garden right now. Weeds going crazy. It's been heat index of 104-108°.
I just don't have the energy in the heat. Might start s fall garden when it cools off just a bit.
Question: when you start getting bugs & diseases, do you put up plants * burn or bag & dispose??
    Thanks

  15. With growing carrots. I have great success covering the seeds with straw. About 2". They get sunlight and stay moist.

  16. 8b, and i didn’t get my tomatoes or cucumbers/squash into the ground until memorial day because it took forever to warm up, so that’s all just getting going. i’m staring at things every day because i can’t wait for garden tomatoes 😍

  17. My garden in Zone 5B Ontario Canada is looking sick and sad. It has been too hot and smoke-filled.
I over winter my hot pepper plants indoors on a sunny window in my bedroom and they do well in the summer.

  18. Planted okra July 14th, sprouted on the 17th, planted pinkeye purple hull seeds yesterday (8/1), not up yet, of course. These weren't mentioned in the video, but Southerners are most familiar with them. I'm probably just a tad late, but we'll see. Zone 7b/8a.

  19. Yes, it is hot and buggy, but my garden just started producing😂 Got my first big slicer tomatoes last week, so I’m sure not tired of it yet!

  20. Most of garden is done. Only left a couple of peppers and 1 eggplant . Just picked the peppers clean. Left those to see if they will produce more. Located in Louisiana. Very hot.

  21. Zone 10a, over the years I’ve found that pulling my struggling tomatoes, zucchini, beans, and cukes around this time and replacing them with new transplants is worth the effort saved from trying to keep the old ones alive. I finally installed retractable shade cloth and that’s helping so much!

  22. When considering how many days you have til your first frost and whether a crop will mature, it is also important, at least in some areas, to consider that the days will be getting shorter in the northern latitudes. Last year I planted corn, thinking there were plenty of days to get cobs, but when the equinox happened, days got shorter and the corn simply didn't have enough time.

  23. I’m quite the novice gardener but this is my second time trying zucchini I one possible zucchini out of 4 plants. I may have needed the free gardening guide earlier. I might have overwatered, took too many leaves off, let them get too much sun? I tried the trellis method because I didn’t think I had enough room. I was afraid of them getting the powdery mildew. I currently have successful tomatoes coming. A few beefsteak, pineapple, San marzanos that are plentiful but small and a few cherry tomato plants that I’ve already picked a few. I decided in mid July to plant some dwarf gray sugar peas that are coming but no blossoms yet. Also two pumpkins that grew last year sprouted and those are growing but no successful pumpkins growing yet. In in South eastern MA.

  24. Started on 2nd plantings already. Corn is up 8 inches! 1st crop was good, except had several stalks (spaced correctly)that had no ears !.Bush beans, summer/winter squash. Thanks for the idea of beets. I have some blank spaces & got nary a beet with the pring planting.

  25. Im in N.Y. this summer has been so hot and so much rain, its ridiculous. Im also waiting for my tomatoes to ripen. Don't even have any peppers yet. 😢

  26. Just cut open my 4 squash plants to get rid of squash vine bores today…. Yeah… I am so tired of this season 😂😂😂
