BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – After the recent sale of Gardener’s Supply Company to an out-of-state company, layoffs are now imminent at the store.

It’s still unclear how many people will be impacted, but sources tell WCAX that employees at the Milton warehouse and some at the Burlington location will be let go on Tuesday.

The Burlington-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June, in part, because of retirement payouts to employees. It’s unclear if laid-off employees will get any of their benefits.

Despite no listing on the state’s website, Milton Town Manager Chris Taylor says that a WARN notice was issued. That’s the federal law that requires employers to provide advanced notification to workers ahead of a closing or mass layoff.

“It’s very important, and any time there is a possibility of somebody in Milton losing their employment, it’s an impact to the town as well as losing a business like that — is an impact to the restaurants in town, our convenience store, so it’s going to be an impact,” Taylor said.

The Vermont Department of Labor says it’s aware of the layoffs and that they are reviewing the documents and requirements regarding the WARN Act notice.

Gardener’s Supply officials said they had no comment.
