I would prefer mesh over foam. Foam gets clogged too easily

I’d go with a wide-ish mesh, I’ve made the mistake of using sponge/a thick mesh for the filter intake and it always got clogged!

Short answer is yes. It will eventually get clogged. But how long depends upon the critters and what’s in the water. More animals and more botanicals gets clogged quickly. You should have a method to clean.
On my one tank, I made a sponge foam box siliconed together for the pump to sit in. ( the top is only glued on one edge and has slots for the hose and cord. ) I’m currently building another tank and am planning on make a mesh corner cover with foam inside to hide and protect the pump. And add filtration.
