How am I meant to be mowing the lawn? I bought a mower, am I meant to be going forward only or can I go forward and backwards?

Also is there a reason why the grass just looks untidy after mowing it? It has a storage compartment but some grass clippings are still on the grass, am I just meant to be picking them up or is there a tool for it?

I’d appreciate any help as I’ve never had to garden before and I’m winging it.

Thanks

  1. Your lawn is very overgrown, so lift your blades up as high as they’ll go and take it in multiple passes, lowering the blades with each pass. Forwards only. Best to only take one third off of a lawn though, so you’ll cause this a little stress if you try and get it to a normal level in one day, but it’ll recover. When it’s at a sensible length, cut little and often for best results.

    grass rake for afterwards.

once youve battled through that grass cut it every 2 weeks until November then stop.

Who’s got green grass at the moment?!

Mow on the highest cut, did you have to put the blade on the mower, if yes, did you put it on the right way ?

You want to go forwards in a straight line then turn round and go back over the same patch, then move over slightly and rinse and repeat. Empty the grass bin when it’s full or you’ll be dropping cut grass everywhere and most importantly avoid mowing over your own power cable.

2 cut method. Highest setting for your first cut. Then lower the mower height and mow again. Makes mowing easier and less likely to choke the mower up with grass.

Mow which ever way is best for you but vary it up a bit. Make sure the mower is clean as well as the collection bag so air can flow through (and grass). Don’t mow if the grass is wet.

I do ours on the highest setting possibly one down if we’re away for a bit, every time all year. That way it’s drought resistant as more leaf means more morning dew which means more water for it and it shimmers nicely in the wind as a bonus. Scalping lawns is so last century. 😉
